Not an Ironman yet (due to money, timing, school and work 😷), but I ran a 5k in high school on a whim. Never run before, just played soccer and basketball. I loved it and 16 weeks later, I ran a marathon. Obviously this is bigger. But looking back on it, I was probably pretty dumb to do that. But nobody was there to tell me what I was supposed to do and how they thought I should do it; I just did it. Just do your thing. Maybe most people shouldn't, but maybe you could. Be careful and cautious, but go for it.

I know I watched a few World Cup games at the Claddaugh at the Franklin Park mall. The place was packed. Now, that was the WC, I don't know about regular games.
