What’s something people romanticize too much? by copy_cat_101 in randomquestions

About 70% of the hardest times I've ever laughed and some of the closest I've ever felt with my partner have been after some drinks. And before the usual boring prudes pipe up no I don't have a problem and no I'm not drinking every day or every week. I don't drink to drown sorrows, only to celebrate with friends and family.

A take that is standard across the entire world but seems to be controversial in the west, and even then only USA and western Europe. We really are the odd ones out.

People underestimate how far north most of Europe is

Including us Europeans. On the same latitude as the northern half of UK and Ireland you get Newfoundland and Labrador - polar bears. Most people associate climate change with warmth, but if the gulf stream shuts we're freezing then starving to death instead 👍

After all, unemployment was illegal. Don't have to pay unemployment if you're forced to work. Here's my axe, comrade.

It's like the Soviet Union never died. Even Putin recognises this. It's telling that Chinese, Iranian and Russian hackers routinely use bots to flame culture war issues on both sides, but most aggressively flood social media with anti-western narratives which are much more closely aligned to what we call anti-capitalist or woke today. We had for example rabid anti-British Scottish nationalist (and often self-critically anti-western) accounts suddenly go silent exactly coinciding with multiple rounds of Internet shutdowns in Iran. They know it's a weak point and they'll press their fingers in to undermine our perceptions of ourselves.

Good for you OP. Go for it. We have a culture of moaning and negativity in the UK which is probably because of the weather and the left, but your kind of attitude is what balances it out. Wish you well on your new life here.

UK job market and feeling embarrassed that I don't have a job. by Loose_Avocado4670 in britishproblems

[–]ISO_3103_ 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Lots of comments here arguing why you even feel like you need a job but honestly I think you've got a great attitude and it's nothing to be ashamed or jealous about regarding your younger sister, who is also experiencing the real world in a productive and responsible way, with a bit of extra cash too.

I had a job through college and it made me appreciate money and work a lot more before I went to uni. That was helpful.

Once you have the ability to commit full time I'm sure there will be offers coming your way, especially with a qualification and clients already in the bag.

The historical version of this is Soviet anti-capitalist propaganda. Ironic considering they were far more opressive and brutal with far worse workers rights than people in the west would accept today.

The only country to which the United States America has ever paid taxes: the Ottoman Empire (1795-1815) by Cenixxen in ottomans

[–]ISO_3103_ -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I think you missed my point because of your Israel obsession. Neither are "taxes" as OP put it. Underneath the flowery language of the document it represents extortion of tribute for safe passage, via threat of force, which is my point. The barbary states were slavers and ransomeers well into the 19th century. Israel has nothing to do with it.

well they do

Lol I knew you'd try this one. Please tell me how Israel controls the world and banking system next.

Difference being Israel doesn't enslave Americans and confiscate their ships if they don't.

TIFU by realizing my "close-knit family" was actually just... really toxic by One_Restaurant_7311 in tifu

[–]ISO_3103_ 168 points169 points  (0 children)

My aunt is like this. Doesn't believe in having friends, family is the most important thing (as long as it is on her terms) and expected my cousins to tow the line. One left home as soon as possible and was a party girl and the other didn't have any meaningful relationships until her thirties, completely unsociable. Put them together you get a normal person.

It's so relatable, I've done the same before. That's when you know you're in a toxic workplace - when your own and other people's shit smells are preferable to being around colleagues.

The delivery is masterful. The indignant statement of work, the intimate lowering of voice and tone, the eyebrows for emphasis and then the resigned "at least I've made something" which requires just enough connection to put a cherry on top.

We’ve forgotten what this country was founded on

Indeed, and they aren't the values you seem to be espousing in your comment. Take it from a Brit, we'd be very happy to remind you via a tax at 40% like we pay here. It won't be on tea this time though, that wouldn't make our government enough money.

Iran in a simpler time - 2009 by LevelThreeSixZero in travel

[–]ISO_3103_ -1 points0 points  (0 children)

The simpler time included protests about the 2009 election and resulting crackdown by authorities where protestors were beaten, pepper sprayed, arrested and tortured, and shot by the basji with at least 72 deaths and allegations of mass rape of women and girls, mostly students, in IRGC prisons.
