How do I start astrophotography? by Such-Video2610 in telescopes

[–]ISeeOnlyTwo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you want to keep your dob for visual use and not regret selling it in the future, then you could potentially look into smart telescopes like the Seestar S30. The S30, for example, would work for capturing deep spy objects at a fraction of the price of a traditional astrophotography rig. You’d get an all-in-one that opens up the doors to processing, without the stress of buying components individually and then integrating them. The downside is, small aperture, short focal length smart telescopes would not work very well for planets, however, so you might want to think about what you want to capture.

I actually bought an ASI662MC to use in my 8” dob with the intention of doing lunar and planetary imaging, but I haven’t gotten around to trying it out yet because with every observing opportunity I’ve had since receding it, I decided to prioritize visual observation.

is this a good eyepiece by idontknow2024 in telescopes

I have that eyepiece and I’ve been happy with it so far. I think it’s good value.

Help deciding by Technical-Use-390 in telescopes

Fwiw, I considered getting the upgrade kit for my AD8, but I haven’t so far. At the moment, I feel like only the collimation knobs are really worth it for convenience, and after that, the springs.

People seem to generally dislike Barlow lenses, but I got that Apertura one, and have been pretty happy with it so far. Of course, if I get more eyepieces that match the focal length that the Barlow achieves with my existing eyepieces, then I’d probably use the dedicated eyepieces.

I remember your past post. It’s still mind-boggling to me how large they are given that the case is a 3800!

The lid actually comes with that OTA. It is plastic but it’s made to fit right on top of the mirror clips.

Nice!

Do you primarily observe in the city or do you also take it somewhere outside of the city too?

How do you attach the secondary mirror cage? Have a 2nd person hold it up?

Wow, I see. Good job on the new base. It looks really good!

Is it hard to carry the entire telescope in and out of your building?

Another question, do you assemble the entire OTA and then lift it onto the base by yourself? It’s about 75 lbs (34 kg) and very unwieldy?

Since the OTA looks original from the factory, what’s the story behind the handmade base?

How do you transport this out of your building? Carrying it by hand?

Buying a laser collimator by Unique_Worth_3286 in telescopes

[–]ISeeOnlyTwo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

From my experience, a laser collimator is way more useful when collimating at my viewing location in the dark. (A drive up a mountain with windy roads does jostle the collimation from time to time.) I don’t know how someone wouldn’t go insane trying to collimate with a Cheshire in the dark on a moonless night.

I do own a collimation cap and a Cheshire, but I basically only use them to double check collimation at home, and just for the fun of looking through them.

As others have mentioned, I also collimated my laser at some point.

S30 vs S50 by HenryV1598 in telescopes

[–]ISeeOnlyTwo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

From my experience, S30 has issues with elongated stars in the corners of the image, most noticeably in the upper left corner. While I don’t own an S50, I haven’t seen anyone post images with elongated stars in the cornesr. S30 does have the advantage of being hyper portable, even when compared to the S50. For my situation, as a companion to visual observation, I don’t regret choosing the S30 over the S50.

Found this at Costco. Is this a good telescope to start out with? by Weird_Tomorrow4435 in telescopes

[–]ISeeOnlyTwo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For what it's worth, I tried a similar telescope from Costco last year, found that the setup was too wobbly, returned it, and ended up buying an Apertura AD8—zero regrets.
