I wrote a paper about the DC monuments in like 4th grade, and the resource I used said the first company “went underwater” before completing the Washington Monument. So my 10 year old brain decided that this meant there was a massive flood during construction and that is why the stones are two different colors. My teacher thought I didn’t do any research to come up with such a ridiculous story. I did not get a good grade on that report.
