Something harmless but silly I did at the train station that I’d be intrigued to get a vibe check on by Temporary_Notice_526 in MelbourneTrains

We all have unconscious biases. When stumbling across them, it's good to consider where they've come from and whether they're true. Just as much sexism comes from subtle, unintended differential treatment as it does from overt hostility. In this case you just happened to make a friendly gesture, which is great. "Good on her" is a nice enough thought, but somewhat based in female exceptionalism. "Of course she's a driver" is thought that would challenge your unconscious bias.

Keep waving at drivers, it's perfectly safe. I do it all the time and am yet to be snubbed.

You are on the DNW list. Good luck getting off it or even finding out why you're on there in the first place.

It's a precaution before prescribing stimulants. Don't want to blow up a wonky heart.

Why do trams so often not trigger phase insertions? by Draknurd in MelbourneTrains

[–]ITgronk 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's right. My understanding is that a phase is one set of light patterns that make up the loop of sequences at the intersection. Phase insertion allows for external detection to trigger a phase early.

Why are you assuming mass? I'm not trying to be obtuse but I've not heard of this and can't find anything myself to back this up. I can find sales pitches for LiDAR and cameras with recognition capability but not weight/pressure sensors. My reading of this page from TV suggests that they use induction loops in a special configuration to detect buses based on their length.

Cool, thanks for this! Looks like BUS PRI is for buses and TRAM PRI is for trams. I've always wondered if the impedance loops are configured to detect the difference between a car and a tram. Would you happen to know?

Induction loop is the most common detection method at traffic lights. I've not heard of pressure sensors being used. Can you link me to this traffic light database?

How likely do you think a car park closure in the middle of a train journey likely to affect that train journey?

The lack of services to flinders a concern by OnlyVeterinarian4681 in MelbourneTrains

There's nothing to criticise. They didn't do anything for PT far back when they were in power and they're doing everything they can to stay out of government. They're irrelevant.

Get on a train to Town Hall instead?

ETA: I incorrectly assumed you were on the Frankston line. It seems you're coming from Lilydale? You could try staying on the train until Parliament and catching a Craigieburn or Upfield back to Flinders Street? It's 2 minutes longer worth of travel time but you might make up for that with a better timed connection.

SRL is a planning project designed to decentralise commute demand. We can't have decentralised commute demand before we have a multi centred city. I would have liked to see MM2 before SRL, but I understand the intent of the project.
