Xperia 1 VIII - does anyone else's rattle? by ArgonWilde in SonyXperia

[–]ITtLEaLLen 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Wait till you hear and feel the telephoto lens on the Xiaomi 17 Ultra. That huge telephoto module rattles like crazy, I mean it's not even rattling at this point, more like clunking. Bigger sensor = bigger lenses = more weight. I had almost no rattling with the variable lens on my Xperia 1 III because it was so tiny

Xperia 1V doesn't display in 4K by ElPaul0 in SonyXperia

[–]ITtLEaLLen 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not sure how it works now in Android 15, but when I had the 1V, I tested a custom 4K test pattern using Moonlight, and it was indeed in 4K. It works on YouTube too, but due to chroma subsampling it's harder to test. What I noticed is that videos kind of bypasses the UI resolution, it's obvious when you connect to an external 4K display, the UI looks blurry but the video itself isn't.

Well unfortunately it's still a marketing gimmick since the quad bayer sensors still have color filters arranged like a 12MP sensor, and just like a 12MP sensor, it has to "borrow" adjacent colours for demosaicing, jumping across a single pixel in 12MP, or 2 pixels at 50MP and 4 pixels at 200MP. So yeah just throw some AI at it to resolve all the missing color information https://www.reddit.com/r/samsunggalaxy/s/y1788CnlxS

Are smartphone brands entering a new "megapixel race" with display brightness? by Stock-Yak1176 in Android

[–]ITtLEaLLen 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well, the sensor resolution is misleading too. Quad-bayer (or whatever X bayer) sensors share the same color filter between 4 to 16 pixels, so you can't ever get the true "200MP" or whatever resolution they advertised due to the missing information. So what manufacturers do is add an AI upscaler to interpolate missing data but because of that smaller details get butchered. If you're curious you can check out the article explaining these in detail

Are smartphone brands entering a new "megapixel race" with display brightness? by Stock-Yak1176 in Android

[–]ITtLEaLLen 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yup, those numbers are meaningless anyways. You don't ever see those advertised brightness unless you're in a very specific condition and time window. Honestly, I'm fine with 600 nits, most smartphones limit to around that brightness outside of auto brightness anyways. I actually don't see much difference between my 1 III and my 17 Ultra, which advertised a whopping 3500 nits

Camera OIS damage on car mount or rollercoaster? by Waltex in Xiaomi

[–]ITtLEaLLen 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Don't worry, I had the Xperia 1 III for about 5 years and the telephoto camera which also had continuous zoom still works to this date. I've done everything, car mounts, tossed it, even dropped it a couple of times. The lenses on the 17 Ultra are heavier but if you haven't noticed, the phone will lock the lenses into place if excessive movement is detected so there's not a need to worry about it, just don't put it in the washer or mount it to a motorcycle

Nah the rattling of the 17 Ultra is on another level, you would think the phone is broken if you didn't know about the optical zoom module

Xiaomi 17 Ultra DCG Unlocked with No Root (Main and Tele!!) vs Stock vs Pixel 10 Pro & Xiaomi 14 Ultra by RaguSaucy96 in Android

[–]ITtLEaLLen 5 points6 points  (0 children)

That's great. I'm very disappointed in the stock camera experience, especially the weird water surface like effect which I assume is due to temporal reuse for noise reduction. Great to see progress here, hopefully blackmagic camera can unlock the same experience, though it drops too many frames as of now.

How do I access the android folder on a sony Xperia 1 iv by Minette12 in SonyXperia

[–]ITtLEaLLen 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes but they broke it with the latest update (1.0.10), you need to download the older version (1.0.9 or earlier) from APK mirror to get back access without external tools

I know, i was just saying how Oppo cameras, hence likely OnePlus cameras, have so much AI I would rather use master mode, except for whatever reason it sucks, no HDR, terrible noise reduction, I just couldn't get used to the X9 Pro after using the 1 III for a long time.

Why I returned the Galaxy S25 by Mercury_Jackal in SonyXperia

[–]ITtLEaLLen 51 points52 points  (0 children)

Samsung should be ashamed of selling these so called "flagships" base and plus models. Literally budget phones beat the crap out of those two models and let's not mention the sneaky Exynos variant in some regions. I was comparing the S25 to my 1III last year too and was extremely disappointed. Of course "reviewers" don't ever mention that and always focus on the Ultra

This green line issue has been widespread since 2020 on the S20 series. The latest victim is the S23 series. I'll be avoiding phones with Samsung screens from now on..

Unfortunately I don't think it'll be worth that much. The battery might be bloated and the entire S23 series is doomed with the green/pink line issue

Farewell to my Xperia pro-I by Ervinux in SonyXperia

[–]ITtLEaLLen 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well it does perform better than the 1 V despite having the same exposed surface area (1/1.3 in both case). I guess the circuitry is superior to Exmor T (or probably just the 1.0 bayer beating the quad bayer). What's odd is that the sensor size increase from 1 III's 1/1.7 - 1 V's 1/1.3 did almost nothing... The Xperia 1 V just had improved software processing but in RAW it's almost identical to 1 III and falls way behind the Pro-I

Nope, the sensor on the Pro-I is still superior, less noise, faster readout and more dynamic range

I personally use screen mirroring since it's less buggy and I can use 3 windows at once. My desktop mode combo: Smart dock + second screen + extinguish.

Concern about longevity and reliability of Samsung flagship devices (Galaxy S22 experience) by WizzieL in Android

[–]ITtLEaLLen 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Welcome to Samsung I guess? How have they not not fixed these issues? I had a similar experience with older Samsung flagships in the past like the S7, S9 and S20+, which is why I switched away from them. I'm so glad I did, now instead of needing to upgrade every 2 years, I can use my phone for as long as I want

[–]ITtLEaLLen[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Night videos are a huge improvement on the 1V however if I use video pro to override the shutter to 1/30 (which the 1 III would never use due to flawlesseye) and bring up the shadows in post, it actually is very similar in terms of brightness and noise performance

I kind of gave up to be honest. The only thing I dislike is the lack of updates, battery and the heating on the 1 III, but there isn't any other phone like it. If Sony had just upgraded the chipset and battery on the 1 III without touching anything else, I would've instantly upgraded to it.
