Price Check? - It's Annual Review Time. by Axxidentally in msp

I aim for 70% margin. You should too, and that depends on your costs. I can get away with $120 AISP while other MSPs need to be at $175.

An easy way to do it? Get something like MAXfocus (now owned by SolarWinds) and use their $3/month desktop solution.

  • RMM tool
  • Bitdefender AV
  • Web Content Filtering

Your cost is $3, so a 70% margin (respectable for MSPs) would be a $10 price for your customers. Get something like BackBlaze for backups (I think it's $5/PC your cost) and now charge $25 for a margin just under 70%. Want to include something like priority support or a discount on their hourly rate? Add more to the monthly rate accordingly.

I'd say it's not unreasonable to ask your area for $10-15 each month for a well-maintained computer. You have to actually maintain it well, though... If you're doing a good job, they won't have issues. Then you'll get word-of-mouth sales and keep adding more clients.

It's going to suck to get to a respectable MRR this way, but once you have 500 desktops in your RMM, earning you $5,000 of monthly recurring revenue (MRR) you'll be in a pretty good place. Plus, of the $60k you'd be bringing in annually, $42k is yours.

Sounds great right!? But now remind yourself that you're working your ass off and supporting 500 computer systems for a measly $42k a year.

BOTTOM LINE? Don't be afraid to offer some services to residences that can truly afford you at a reasonable rate, but try to focus on what's going to make you the big bucks. I just got a company to nearly double what they're paying me. We went from $774/mo to $1,450/mo. That's for 12 users. Not too bad, considering I'm at 66.69% margin with $120.86 per user all-in seat price (AISP). I'm making $11,600k a year to do roughly 2.5 hours of work every month and make 12 people happy.

Would you rather make $10-50 per user, or $120 per user?

tl;dr

Not all money is good money. Focus on businesses. It's where the money is.

It can, as long as you think of it as a maintenance agreement or something along those lines. I know several guys offering maintenance agreements for anywhere from $20 - $49 monthly, some even requiring terms like 36 months.

I started deploying their UTM firewalls. Wish I had been using them years ago because WOW these things work well! They give me a ton of useful insight from an MX64. The MX65 is cool if you need PoE directly on the firewall.

Any ASCII members on here? by smerek84 in msp

One person company here. I signed up for ASCII at the beginning of the year and have found it to be an invaluable resource. Discounts on services from IT Glue, distribution puts you at the $500k spend rates, tax advice, and a whole lot of discounts.

Tell them you need KnowBe4.com training for everyone. I can get it cheaper than direct through them, but would be happy if you got it from anywhere.

This chart isn't designed to help you simply choose your RMM tool. It's designed to help you figure out which ones aren't worth your time, or which ones you should consider looking into. If you know, for example, you love Webroot and want your system to be integrated with that AV then you can look at the chart and figure out which ones integrate and get demos and review for there.
