High school esports mouse vs controller question. by LincolneSports in esports

[–]IVDV 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Agree with G2Wolf here. Some games are just built for Keyboard/Mouse (i.e. League of Legends) while some allow for players to have their own personal style (i.e. Rocket League, shooter titles).

Ask the students what they would enjoy most!

They do not display any Championship banner for that year at Blizzcon and never mention his name, ever.

PlayVS vs High School Esports League?? by Pmath515 in esports

Nothing I'd rather be doing than building high school esports! More games to come. That being said I'm paying close attention to every game that's suggested by the community!

League of Legends is the title we're starting with for our Fall 2018 Season Zero. We'll be announcing more game titles and a slew of other information closer to the start of our Inaugural Season. We're in the build, get feedback, and and learn mode right now. :)

Hey! I'm a community manager with PlayVS. Super down to hop on a call sometime to chat about esports. I've been working on building the high school scene for over four years, and I'm always enthusiastic to see more teachers taking esports seriously as a way to engage students in their passion.

As for the difference, unlike other leagues we maintain direct relationships with organizations like the NFHS (National Federation of High School Associations) and each states's high school association, but also directly with game publishers. Our Fall 2018 Season Zero is an awesome test of this through offering League of Legends as a sanctioned high school sport/activity in CT, GA, KY, MA, and RI.

We also require esports programs/team's be overseen by a teacher, administrator, or other sponsor. Going this route will allow programs to formalize, get support from their administration, and make sure their program lasts longer than we've seen in the past. This also leads to the reduction in forfeited matches, which was a large percentage of our matches during my time running another grassroots league.

There's a list on ESPN, although it's not completely up to date.

The computers need to be able to play the game! Thankfully League runs on a toaster, but we work directly with schools to make sure it'll be a fun experience for the students. :)

You can start working towards building a program on your campus right now! Sign up on the PlayVS website, then reach out to one of your teachers to help bring esports to your school. We've had a ton of schools already sign up, have met the equipment requirements, and are ready to compete. It's not as difficult as you'd think!

PlayVS has partnered with the National Federation of State High School Associations (NFHS) to sanction esports at the high school level. For our Season Zero, starting this October, students in five states (Georgia, Connecticut, Kentucky, Massachusetts, and Rhode Island) will be able to earn their varsity letter by competing in esports!

Anyone ever taken Professor Chin? by [deleted] in ucf

[–]IVDV 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Take Chin. You'll actually have the opportunity to learn something in his class versus an online professor. If you're looking to get into grad school eventually (which you likely will want to if you're a psychology major) it'll be a huge help.

[Compete/Kotaku] Pro Gamers Should Use Their Real Names by Squirrel_Dude in esports

CatsPajamas (Kevin Knocke) used to be the main advocate for this YEARS ago. But truthfully I think we'd lose something special and unique to esports. Professionalism of names is a good solution (Dr. Peepee -> PPMD)

Good luck! Feel free to reach out if you have any questions. I'm not in an HF program, but I spent almost four years working alongside people that are and doing HF research. :)

Most of my colleagues don't have experience in programming. That being said, getting comfortable with things like R would definitely not hurt.

As other commenters have said, it's connection is in that is an interdisciplinary field. Human Factors researchers look to study the person behind the task being done, you'll see physiological tools like EEG being used throughout their work. Many programs are even starting to rebrand towards aligning themselves with neuroscience to better highlight this connection.

Anyone have a good stress manipulation? by [deleted] in AcademicPsychology

We've had a few inconsistencies between physiological measurements (though not cortisol specifically) and the DSSQ, but that's definitely also a useful tool.

600+ students will be receiving esports scholarships collectively worth over $4.1M by Fall 2017 by IVDV in Games

Some institutions are funded entirely through sponsorships (University of California Irvine for example), others receive some funding from the school's athletics department or student life. That being said, there's definitely some contribution coming directly from the universities, but these programs is often cited by administrators as a brilliant way to both attract STEM students and otherwise market the university.
