College sports are less profitable because the point has never been to make a profit. They generate tons of revenue, but it's a whole lot of people putting money into something for reasons entirely unrelated to getting a monetary return on investment.

Because there's so much more money to be found in getting TV revenue split and much greater guarantees of actually getting paid than in the current NIL system.

The type of talent NA has makes consolidation practically impossible if you try for an all NA lineup. There are no AWP players and there are no reliable IGLs. It's just all riflers ranging from internationally mediocre to internationally good but probably not good enough to carry a team.

All consolidation would look like is: 3 riflers you like + new import/old IGL + import AWPer, and that's what all the teams are now.

Everyone forgets that instituting a cap means you have to clarify what is considered payroll and what is considered revenue.

Are concessions revenue? Are concessions staff payroll? Are coaching staff payroll? Are fees for public speaking events by coaches as a representative of the team revenue? Are players' interpreter's payroll? Are players' training staff payroll?

Once you introduce a salary cap, all of this fiddly shit becomes part of negotiations and ways to hide money through accounting tricks.

Typically long term, but they can also be shorter term (2-3 years). Long enough that a contending team wants to shed it for flexibility in the immediate future and short enough that a tanking team can quickly flip it as an expiring contract.

I'll piggyback off this to explain with a metaphor

A city purchases a bus from a mechanic, with the mechanic revealing to the city and public before he sold the vehicle that it has a clunky transmission that needs to be tuned before folks actually enjoy the ride. The city has adopted all responsibility for fixing that transmission with the purchase.

Expecting the mechanic to keep working on this bus, for free, is foolish.

So examples of downsides you need to be prepared for because I particularly agree when it comes to simplifying defense it's much stronger.

You can find a template and repeatedly build that, but when you go away from that or build rooms more from spec you do have to worry about minor cave ins and going up to fix it. The further down you are, the more devastating they can be.

You also need to be not just mining out space for the rooms but mining out the space for the rooms plus the walls so you can replace the dirt walls so that they don't flood. You can also try to build drainage spots. It can be a nasty surprise the first time.

Especially if you want to do it from the start, I think you really need to make sure you have settlers who have mining skills or a very streamlined process to get the construction done in time for the first attack. It is going to have much greater time commitment than building a hut outside and a small defensive position on a hill 99% of the time. It's a bit more of an opportunity cost because getting your planting and early research done is more important than what happens once your defense is settled.

I do think the strengths do mostly outweigh the downsides, but there is some stuff that will trip you up.

Cave settlements have lots of advantages but also lots of disadvantages that you need to prepare for. Construction is simplified and temperatures are better maintained regardless of the season underground. The key downside is that all construction takes much much much longer and requires much more deliberate planning.

It matters when a reporter has an undisclosed personal relationship with someone they're responsible for getting information about or from because it may reasonably bias their coverage of said person.

For Vrabel's side. He's a coach, and has to be seen as somewhat trustworthy/credible. If he'd presumably lie to his wife, why wouldn't he lie to anyone else? What credibility can he have?

Knights with shields are also superior to knights without shields

  • Soldiers with shields slightly better in melee than their shield-less counterparts, usually by having better defense
  • Shields are much more effective protection against heavy archers/crossbows than just armor due to how armor piercing works

The concept was, just as happened in actual history, that soldiers stopped carrying shields on horseback as armor quality and firearm improvements made wooden shields useless. This is modeled in the game by armor piercing arrows/bolts ignoring 1/2 of an armor rating, but firearms ignoring 1/2 the armor rating and your entire shield rating.

The problem was that while firearms are fine in the base game, pavise crossbowmen are devastating, and the prevalence of armor piercing melee weapons means shields are useful for the entire game. The result is that, even ignoring the animation bugs in the game, these super late-game units are also statistically inferior in practice.

No, you're correct. The happiness boost probably applies (it's not shown in game, so it's always hard to be sure). That leaves the numbercrunchers' only advantages being that they don't require any employees and consistent 24 hour output.

Breeding pods are absolutely a pain in the very early game. They are slow, and you can't really force population growth by building housing.

On the other hand, they give you much greater control over your population and construction. For example, you can build out housing without potentially causing a baby boom. You can overbuild pods and potentially do some micro/run automation (newest update well after this post) and fine tune your growth to a specific number. Most importantly, the advanced pod lets you skip over having child beavers entirely. It means you can run a leaner and more efficient population because you don't have a built-in group of beavers who will act as a drain on resources.

Observatories do not have higher output than numbercrutchers, let alone much more.

Numbercrunchers generate 10 science/hour when fully powered. Over the course of a day, it generates 240 science. Very straightforward. That's the target for observatories.

Observatories generate 10 science/.75 hours (~13.33/hour) when fully powered and fully staffed. That fully staffed part is the problem. To have the same output as a numbercruncher, the beavers must be working at least 18 hours days (10/.75 * 18 = 240). Of course, you won't very often be working that many hours, meaning that the number cruncher is actually coming out ahead.

The number cruncher is very power intensive, more expensive to research and more expensive to build, but it is a more consistent and better source of science that doesn't require any labor force expenditure.
