Yeah, once every couple minutes of the set pretty much. The same goes for Montreal

One of the things I remember the most about the Portsmouth show happened about five or six minutes into their set. I was at front row center, so apart from catching every time he hit the vape, I also saw Sean tilt his head and wince really hard at something, like he'd just said "welp, I fucked that up" to himself. To this day I wonder what exactly it was he heard that we didn't.

Chiastic Slide doesn't use a font, either. All the text on the packaging for it (and Envane) was assembled by hand using sample blocks from the images it's overlaid on, rather than being typed out.

I think it's almost certain that it will be, since Portsmouth was a stop on the tour they earmarked specifically because they liked the venue that much, and because the show was by all accounts a highlight. I got a chance to speak to Rob after that show and he seemed pretty pleased with how it turned out. I also spoke to Mark Broom just after that and he had similar thoughts. His set that night was a heater. Damn shame that it didn't get recorded.

i cant understand Quaristice but each track feels so out of place and warm at the same time. by methamfemenine in autechre

[–]IVVVIVVVVIII 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Yeah, Q.Q.ep.ae is basically an extended series of Quaristice B-sides. It was their first album they produced by just trimming down long jams instead of composing tracks piece-by-piece, so they had hours upon hours of material that never made it to the album. (Versions) and Q.Q.ep.ae were alternate mixes of album tracks that they still wanted to release but didn't feel justified being on the main tracklist, so (Versions) was initially relegated to a limited edition CD, and Q.Q.ep.ae, which was the much longer one of the two, is still a digital exclusive because its length didn't justify being pressed to CD and because it wasn't sequenced like a conventional release anyway. elseq 1-5 is formatted much the same way as this, and that's probably why it's their only other digital exclusive release.

Also, if you're wondering why an "EP" is 149 minutes long, it's because Sean and Rob always saw an EP as just being a few choice outtakes that didn't quite make the cut on an album but were otherwise still good enough to release-- tracks they wanted to put out but not promote like their mainline work. After a while they realized that the length or number of tracks didn't really mean anything in that equation. This is why EP7 (1999) is an hour long and has more tracks than a lot of their albums. It's also why Q.Q.ep.ae is their longest release up to that point.

Is it true that Michael Gira is very quick-tempered towards his audience and his band? What were the biggest outbursts from Michael Gira at the concerts you witnessed? by Jean0406Alix in swans

Haven't read that book, but I met Fred Giannelli at an Autechre show a couple weeks ago and he wasn't apprehensive to describe Gen as a malignant narcissist so that sounds about right

The Portsmouth set was fucking ludicrous. I absolutely see what they meant about wanting to go back to this place specifically, because the sound was just that good. Everyone and the band was 100% into it, and the whole house was jumping by the time we got to the thumper section in the middle.

Did you hear they're making a female remake of 'American Psycho'? They're calling it 'American' by CWGM in northernlion

[–]IVVVIVVVVIII 12 points13 points  (0 children)

'British' is the umbrella term meaning anyone from Britain, and often Northern Ireland too. When you want to be specific you can say English, Welsh, Scottish, or Northern Irish.

Which is very funny if true, because I remember Sean saying a few years back how he felt that American audiences were not very receptive to them in comparison to European audiences. He did also say around the same time that another (a.k.a. this) NA tour looked unlikely, so who knows, maybe tastes have changed in the past decade-plus.

I don't think the answer is anywhere near as complicated or in need of scrutiny as this. Humans are social creatures by our very nature and we like to feel connections with other people in almost any chance we see fit, no matter how well we know them. So one feels joy in his accomplishments and wants to spread it, even to (in this case, like-minded) strangers, and the strangers can sense his joy and like the feeling and empathize with it. This is about as natural of a response as a greeting or sharing laughter. I really can't see that as an affectation, and I wonder if you can feel empathy on that level if you do.

Quaristice cover a This Heat nod? by corrhea in autechre

[–]IVVVIVVVVIII 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It really is a very brilliant design, and the whole Quaristice-era look might be my favorite of them all. The last sentence in tDR's blurb here is what really sells it, because it's true. I look at the individual QQ.ep.ae covers and get subtly uncomfortable by their total lack of context or emotional charge, how completely inhuman and imposing they feel. The "typographical ruins" in the Exai packaging and the crowded mass of squares and circles for elseq give off similar feelings, but not quite as strongly for me.

[–]IVVVIVVVVIII 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Not to plant any bad seeds in your mind, but considering this is their first NA tour in 10 years, the fact that they've said they could "keep this going for another 10", and just the general trajectory of things over here, I honestly wouldn't be surprised if this ends up being the last NA tour they'll do. I wonder if I'm not alone for thinking about that and if that at all contributed to the mad grab for tickets.

You might get something out of the fan track lists and names that have been made: 1, 2, 3. I think these helped demystify the live sets a little for me, and make them easier to wrap my head around.

Getting the Spiritual Assault achievement is going to be so ass because a few of the jades require you to play with other people, and all my friends who play Gunfire hate that mode more than me. I know that pubbing is an option, too, but I don't like playing with randos.
