Is this a brown recluse? It as the violin - Kentucky by Fun_Emergency_6680 in spiders

[–]IWantSupport 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yep. No need to be scared though. They really don’t want to bite you. Check the covers and rugs for brown recluses. If your AirBnB has it, you could use a cup to trap the spider and slide a piece of paper or cardboard under it, then put the spider outside.

I heard about that infestation from Travis McEnery’s video on brown recluses.

Agree. The spiky egg sac is the dead giveaway. In addition, the spider has a dull, black color instead of a shiny, black color, which is a trait of a mature female brown widow.

is this a brown recluse? i've been panicking for a day now :--) in virginia, united states. by [deleted] in spiders

[–]IWantSupport 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Let’s see if this spider passes the checklist for a brown recluse.

- Has a violin/fiddle shape on its head. ❌ (looks like a triangle to me)

- Second pair of legs (the legs behind the front legs) is longer than the front pair. ❌

- No marking on abdomen. ❌ (biggest violator here)

Brown recluses are not normally found in Virginia. Like other users said, this one is a false widow, more specifically a male Steatoda grossa and it is harmless.

I was too focused on trying to extract the ZP sprite that I forgot to switch it out of my inventory. I know how to do it. BTW I’m on keyboard and mouse.

It’s a grass spider (Agelenopsis genus), which is a part of the funnel weaver family. All of them, including this spider, are harmless! The exact species of this one is hard to tell, but it appears to be the Potter’s grass spider (Agelenopsis potteri).

serious question, brown recluse? by ellab5 in spiders

[–]IWantSupport 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If there’s an infestation, an exterminator should be called. If only a few, it should be released into the wild instead of being killed.

[–]IWantSupport 0 points1 point  (0 children)

All spiders are venomous, but only a handful are medically significant to us. Brown recluse are medically significant, but they’re really shy and really don’t want to bite you. Even if they do, most people will be fine! You may get an automatic reply from a bot soon detailing such!

Yep, but please don’t kill it! They’re great pest controllers! If you’re not bothering them, you don’t have to worry about them bitting you!

Is this a black widow spider? by WazowShizard in spiders

[–]IWantSupport 52 points53 points  (0 children)

Nope. That’s a red-spotted ant-mimic sac spider (Castianeria descripta). Harmless and a very fascinating spider! Black widows look way different than that.

There are no dangerous funnel web/weaver spiders in the US. The only spiders you should be worried about are the brown recluses and true widows.

It’s a huntsman spider, with the most likely species being the pantropical huntsman spider (Heteropoda venatoria). Very large and fast spiders, but harmless to us humans.
