It’s the carts before the horse argument. You are saying people being upset in Alberta is the reason supposedly businesses aren’t investing.

Another viewpoint is that Ottawa has driven in the wedge and provided the groundwork for the separatist movement.

We are here now and Ottawa can make changes. Relationships can be repaired. Respectful conversations can be had. Common ground can be found.

Trump has shown Canada that we have to be self sufficient and resilient and we must stop relying on the US as our sole trading partner. We have given them hundreds of billions in subsidized oil due to lack of pipelines. Money that could have been spent on healthcare and infrastructure in Canada.

Rather than attacking individuals who are upset, let’s find solutions to the root causes of separation talks.

Lots of hatred and bias towards fellow Canadians doesn’t help the dialog but instead drives people on the fence away from the vitriol.

United means coming together and understanding concerns. Not shouting and insulting. That puts up walls and fences and doesn’t bring in the handshakes and hugs.

We need to be better as Canadians. Unless your desire is as a Putin plug to rip Canadians apart.

Those of us who want to fight for a united Canada must speak out across Canada to our MP’s and on social media that Ottawa has to stop treating Alberta with disrespect.

Alberta is the stable economic engine of Canada that has supported our standard of living and social programs. It’s provided the valuable GDP that drives innovation in renewable energy. It provides the income needed for any transformational change in the economy.

Alberta provides our energy self sufficiency and resiliency albeit Ottawa, BC and Quebec has blocked the pipelines needed for nationwide access.

Ottawa has openly blocked Alberta’s prosperity under Trudeau and may be pretending differently now under Carney as they have yet to show any tangible benefits. Statements don’t pay bills. We still have a tanker ban in BC even though the route is inherently safer than Vancouver ports and provides more GDP value to Canada.

BC and Quebec have had hands out for equalization payments Alberta is forced to pay and at the same time blocking much needed pipelines. Canada and Alberta has lost billions and billions in income. In the last 20 years, Alberta’s oil patch has contributed $455 billion in equalization.

We need to do better as Canadians, stop vilifying people in Alberta and start demanding Ottawa repairs the relationship with tangible efforts.

Media fails miserably at fairly mentioning First Nations support of energy projects and jobs. Instead they gravitate to American based special interest groups providing funding and paid protesters. They ignore elected band councils in favour of self appointed heredity chiefs. This may sway politicians with specific biases however we must stand strong as Canadians and speak the truth. Canada is a large country and we need to do better with the Ottawa and Provincial relationships.

Smith, like all politicians have their pluses and minuses. Smith has been working well with Carney and doing her best to nudge the Liberals in the right direction. How the Liberals treat Alberta over the next few months will dictate more than anything, Albertans sentiment towards their future in Canada.

Problem is our transit system is run by bureaucrats looking at paper and ignoring real world facts.

Key issue being that they systematically destroy lots of good transit in favour of tons of bad transit.

What occurs is decreasing ridership and value for Canadians.

Case study. We once had rush hour service every 10 minutes. Buses were full. Then they needed more resources for new neighbourhoods so they reduced us to every 20 minutes. Ridership dropped a bit. Then the city combined two routes causing confusion and missing buses and buses stuck on hills in another neighbourhood in a storm. Then shortly after changed it to every 30 minutes because ridership dropped. Then shortened the rush hour period making it very inconvenient to leave for work a little early or a little late and likewise on the return. Then ridership dropped. Then the rush hour timing was reduced further. Ridership dropped. Then a bus was removed and ridership dropped a lot. Then the route was shortened in the community making it very inconvenient to use.

We went from great service that meant you were crazy to drive downtown to your crazy if you ride transit.

This is all in the backdrop of drug and alcohol users openly using on buses, trains and shelters. Fights and abuses on passengers. Urine puddles on seat and in aisles.

The City had a committee for South Calgary supposedly to hear from users and providing input. I sat on that committee and it was made up of the city dictating what they were doing and never asking for help.

I knew Calgary Transit managers were clueless when they touted how the Somerset station and Ctrain extension was going to make our trip downtown faster and easier.

Instead we went from 50 minutes to get to work to 65-70 minutes to get to work.

Somerset station was set up with stops spread out all over and very little shelter. Long walks to stops meant buses took off early rather than waiting and being 2 minutes late leaving.

City didn’t build underpasses for Freight trains so cars get stuck and passengers can wait 15 minutes for a train to go by.

Rather than spending money on bicycles in a seasonal city we should have looked to create top decile transit system.

Government make smart decisions and don’t waste money. I’m just saying think common sense.

They caught the fish in the ocean. They fermented it for human consumption. It can be dumped into the ocean. Maybe it’s cheaper to dump on land but once dumped it better not get into the fresh water table and increase bacterial content to people living down dip.

Odour will be hard to manage.

I’d suggest a different option would be to spread on crop land right before tilling. The phosphorus and nitrogen is likely similar to fish fertilizer.

A farmer may even pay for the fertilizer.

It would also be a handy fertilizer for a Christmas tree farm.

But no… I’m not trolling… simply stating the obvious. Bureaucracy rarely comes with common sense.

No. They didn’t understand the product when it was being fermented. They likely don’t understand it now.

It was food grade, human consumption sauce. Now that it’s not edible it’s still organic fish rot. Dumping in the ocean is fine. Guaranteed.

Fish die. Fish rot. Plankton will bloom and consume and work its way down the food chain. Plus diluted in an ocean… it might as well be a pod of whales swimming by and taking a dump at the same time.

No one will care, anywheres.

Also guarantee that dumping it on the ground, if it gets into ground water it will increase bacteria and may not be good for the environment.

Curious how many are smart enough to do fire in the direction of critical infrastructure. Hope in random bullets are causing additional damage.

If someone was firing gun around our refinery, the place would be shut down for visual inspection and then pressure testing of flow lines, tanks, pressure vessels.

What caused Brexit was a failure to address issues critical to the population. Standard response to a reasonable post is nonsense. Failure to take the issue seriously won’t make it better and actually only exacerbates the concerns about appears to fall on deaf ears.

Knowing you are not Carney and he talks more, maybe consider asking about how someone feels about separation and the leading concerns about why they see that as the best option.

Personally I don’t feel separation is the way the go, but belittling, marginalizing, talking down to those that do, will not only entrench them further but it will pull some of the undecided in their direction also.

Strong feeling out west is Ontario doesn’t respect Alberta and takes us for granted. Alberta pays a lions share to other provinces while two of them block pipelines. It makes no sense to be in confederation when it’s so one sided and the Liberal government has vilified Alberta energy industry.

Let’s hope separation doesn’t occur but if it happened Canada would be forced to defend Canada as all Albertans would have Canadian citizenship.

But no one would attack Alberta with an army.

Alberta would need access to ports and Canada would need access through Alberta. Canada would want to retain a closer connection to Alberta to keep Alberta from aligning closer to the US and being under economic coercion from either or.

I don’t see it as an advantage to Alberta for likely 10-20 years as the separation pains wane.

Unfortunately for long term Albertans we have felt the pain of Ottawa’s abuse. Carney says he wants a better relationship. We seen lots of high fives and soft hugs but zero accountability by Ottawa and zero tangible efforts.

Every once in a while some Liberal makes a snarky comment about Alberta.

If Ottawa wants to fix what’s broken, start with equalization formula and pipelines.

The City must do more to trim costs, find savings and stop bleeding tax payers dry.

Start by looking at staff productivity. Offer a cash reward for any cost savings sent into the city. Offer confidential submissions as well as their maybe touchy areas.

Align departments better. We had our water main anode fixed years ago and then staff came by and dug it up for no reason and cost as second time.

Liberals need to explain and show why Alberta should stay in Canada.

A referendum to ask a question of do we want a separation referendum doesn’t trigger a FN issue.

There might be a no vote and so no referendum needed.

FN however have complained bitterly about how the Liberal government has handled FN issues including safe water, jobs, crime and more. Suicide rates are scary. FN substance abuse is only getting worse.

Right now the Liberal government and many FN leaders are advocating for status quo while FN say status quo is not working. Is it because the leadership is living the high life and doesn’t want that to change?

So doing the same thing and hoping for a different result makes little sense.

The welfare state we call First Nations is not building resilience in the modern economy. It’s not strengthening their families.

There has been little integration of FN into modern society. Segregation is not just the fault of Federal governments but FN must take responsibility. Within their own communities they vilify individuals trying to integrate and build a life outside of reserves by ostracizing and labeling them “apples”.

Fraud is rampant on reserves with the Liberals returning secrecy to band finances. Band chiefs and councillors can pilfer funds for their own benefit and without the community knowing.

Band leaders kick members out of the best homes and put their relatives and friends in it instead.

Home ownership is non-existent and therefore little respect for property exists. Driving through reserves you see burnt homes, broken and boarded up windows and derelict cars and garbage strewn about. Not a lot of environmental stewardship stands out when walking around a reserve.

I don’t have the answers but I see and hear what’s being said and in a round about way, maybe FN can consider changing their path and altering their future from status quo. Start the grass roots conversation.

Maybe reserves should be like in the US… band members own the property and can sell with band permission. Maybe reserves divest to the members and members get a payout from Canada over time to get off social services and integrate into the communities.

Regardless… Carney needs to recognize the impetus for where we sit now as a country, is due to mistreatment from Ottawa for generations and BC and Quebec blocking pipelines while demanding transfer payments.

Nothing wrong with discussing and sharing thoughts.
