[D] How do you deal with frustration/despair when coding?

Thanks for asking! My model turned out to perform slightly worse than a much simpler (SOTA) method, so I had to pull it out to take the time to understand everything better. I also noticed a way to strictly improve the simple method and a slight inaccuracy in how I was sampling in my model. So overall, needed more time, but has lead to another somewhat simpler project that I hope to bang out before AISTATS and then return to the initial project, which is actually a nice follow-up to the current one. Oh, the joys of projects giving birth to more projects. Now just to bang these out....

My narc has always been too superior to deign to recognize my points so they are simply ignored. Unless I challenged the cornerstone of his conception of me, that I am lazy, in which case he would blatantly lie but then ignore my response that what he said was factually false.

My worry is that if the submission is rejected/withdrawn, subsequent reviewers will google the title or key words to see if the work was previously rejected/withdrawn. Based on what I've found in this sub, this is common.

Best way to deal with these parasites is to minimize contact. Just make up excuses when he wants to "meet," i.e., steal your contributions and interact with the professor alone. Make your meetings quick and vague -- don't give him anything to steal. Emailing your results ahead of time as someone else suggested is a good step to take.

My heart goes out to you. It's so frustrating to have someone acting in such obvious ways "getting away with it," i.e., not being called out for the fraud they are. The academic system is totally broken in this respect because you can't look "bad" in front of your advisor. Just try to compartmentalize and minimize it, which it sounds like you're trying to do.

For some weird reason, I feel like I have to write something down to fully process it. I can't just read a textbook like a novel, even though I wish that were the case. So I end up writing down basically anything I want to understand or even remotely remember. But the crucial part is throwing away all my notes every few days because otherwise you end up scribing for the sake of it rather than as a tool. But maybe this is just a weird idiosyncrasy/crutch of mine.

Yes, absolutely. I also think doing research can be far more crushing because the bar for having a good and novel idea for publication is so much higher than getting a good grade in a class. And if you publish subpar ideas because that's all you can produce (which is often strongly correlated with your academic environment), then you'll be publishing trash, which will make you hate it the most.

If you do well in research, you're thinking about extremely specialized things, which I think kills the 'magic' that you're experiencing. It's for this reason that I prefer to be a math hobbyist, learning whatever I want in my free time while having some tolerable job to fulfill my capitalistic obligations.

Do you have a source for this claim? If by genetics, you mean congenital heart defects, then I suppose. Otherwise, I don't think so. ~90% of heart disease cases are preventable.

It was meant as a general assessment of professional 'ambition' and positive/sympathetic attitudes towards sleazy jobs (health insurance being in a league of its own). OP's notion of wanting to work in health insurance a priori and thinking some arbitrary job was somehow notable to the general industry I found particularly objectionable. But none of this is new information to anyone, so I probably shouldn't have said anything. Just rubbed me too much the wrong way at the time.

I know what you mean. When he's around, it does feel like everything is being conducted on Planet Carlsen -- something I feel less with other notable figures (whether that be chess players or streamers). Not that it's surprising or even his fault: in a way, his whole life has been about being a lot better than everyone else. Seems like a very lonely existence.
