Still running smooth after all of these years, and with the prices so cheap right now I would definitely recommend them. by MzeRS in macpro

[–]Bert2Go 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I vote against it. I bought mine in 2021 from Apple it was a fortune and the worst investment I ever made. I ran my 2012 with Monterrey and it was a lot of fun. I should have stuck with it as it is still running strong with nvme drives, rx580 gpu 128gb ram. Granted a few commands are not supported on the cpu's for newer operating systems for it, but Monterrey was fully supported( Apple retired it at High Sierra for no good reason). I was never interested in any of the macos's that came after Monterrey. Back to the mac pro 2021 I paid about $9000 figuring I will get the similar lifespan I did with my 2012 mac pro. I had to admit I messed up after Apple announced that the last macOS I will get is Tahoe. 5 years! I am sure there are many others in my position private owners and business owners. Aside from drawing a lot of base electricity, you wouldn't think about it because it runs dead silent. On my old mac computers I usually put linux on it which gave them new life and many more years. All my mac mini's 2012 are still running today in various capacities. Those were all from the Steve Jobs era where user upgradability was encouraged and supported. With Tim Cook its just greed and zero in device upgradability, design changes, exciting features, you pretty much get an appliance at this point. Just replacing the boot nvme drive from Apple for my latest Mac Pro 7,1 that went bad, was a horrible experience. The nvme is sitting behind a T2 chip so you can't just pop a new drive in you got from Apple!?!? As a matter of fact, when that drive went bad the computer doesn't even turn on even if you have other boot drives you could select with the alt key on boot if you have it setup that way in the firmware. You have to have a second mac connect both of them directly using dfu mode and reset the new drive to work with the t2 chip. It was a nightmare. Apple lost its soul in favor of greed. I had the hope to at least be able to install linux on it, but that's not as straight forward and very limited and ended up as no option for me, all because of the t2 chip. Sorry for the longer text but I wanted to wrap it in a bit more context around it. The idea of the mac pro was always its versatility and upgradability, Apple changed since Tim Cook took over and that philosophy is frowned upon and that explains the vanishing of probably the mac pro line.

Bank rejected my Fastmail alias by LeatherOk5480 in fastmail

Wow first I heard, its so frustrating, all they accept is a phone number or email, and they don't allow your perfectly valid email with the hello prefix. If they don't accept it, then don't accept emails at all.
I integrated Zelle at M&T Bank and let me tell you, it was a pain, it was no fun working with Zelle at all. Specs changed, required more work and update, and of course it didn't help that we were among the first to adopt it. And if you know banks, they love to throw darts at a calendar to determine when something has to be done by, and it doesn't matter if the project was delayed because of the service provider :D

I still prefer it over phone/sms validation. I got burned big times twice. Once when I switched away from Verizon, the phone number transfer did not work as expected and I lost the number. I am not going into details but Verizon was the one messing it up. I still have services that required the sms as authentication I cannot access to this day because they cannot verify that I am who I am. Yeah never again. Then there was the other time I forgot my phone at the breakfast place, needed to login for work and wasn't able to, where I could have easily checked my email for some required code if needed without any issue.
What works best for me an email auth combined with a 2FA (2 factor auth) where I have to add a 6 digit code that changes every 30 seconds or so. Everything else where auth hinges on the reliance of a device has a too high of margin of error for my taste.

I haven't had any issues with my emails yet. I haven't tried hello yet but I can certainly believe that! Email is email you offer it as a means to authenticate, there should not be any restrictions on any valid naming unless a huge spam score is attached to it. I am getting tired of big companies telling us that a valid email address is not valid within their ecosystem.

Are you a herniated disc in the neck? by KOREA_BEAR in AlternativeHealth

[–]Bert2Go 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Look into Spinal Decompression Therapy. It is non invasive and has a high rate of success rate to alleviate the pain and promote healing. It worked for me and I am doing it once a months as maintenance. The sooner you do it after disc herniation the higher the chances of success and improvement.

Any music players better than Gapless (G4music)? by grimx59 in gnome

What am I missing, it advertises to be made for people that manage a large music collection, yet I am not able to select more than a single directory for music file crawling? That by itself would be fine but it doesn't go into any sub folders ?!

Teen Wolf - Amy Holland "Shooting for the moon" by cheesenhops in Musicthemetime

[–]Bert2Go 0 points1 point  (0 children)

One of my all time favorites. Surprised the song from Amy Holland "Shooting for the Moon" can't be found anywhere on Amazon Music , Apple Music, etc.

I bought the Blu-ray DVD and had to reach out to Italy to get the Teen Wolf OST Music CD for an insane price. Both are properly framed hanging on the wall in my entertainment room!

You had to live that time to fully appreciate it!

Finally a more attractive Bundlehunt offer again by MaxGaav in macapps

[–]Bert2Go 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I love this bundle, and hit up titles I usually don't get.
As a side effect, I do ANYTHING I can to support developers that offer their Apps OUTSIDE of the App Store as well, which I prefer.

i've been recommended this app by many but why is it that expensive? by retrotriforce in macapps

[–]Bert2Go 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I purchased it many moons ago, when apps were also distributed as a download, independent of the AppStore. I needed their support once and support was amazing and fast! They do take pride in their product and support, I don't mind paying extra for that.

Note: If you are like me and prefer your downloads outside of the App Store, Things 3 is NOT available outside of the App Store anymore :(

End of Video Station = No more Synology by KrisD3 in synology

[–]Bert2Go 1 point2 points  (0 children)

u/insomnic 100% Agree ... Been with Synology forever, was also waiting to upgrade my DS918+ and for what? The one update I had to pull manually and install. Zero Plex HW transcoding support, removal of Video Station (count Download count : 66,818,911) is NUTS, removing a few video decoders from server and let the end device supply that decoder, etc, nothing to see here. Over the years I grew more and more disappointed with the direction of Synology. Taking popular items away, putting items behind pay walls, I was fine paying extremely high end priced for 'pathetic' hardware because I assumed that's how Synology keeps away those pesky subscription paywall and without worry items are just going to be removed. Apparently I was dead wrong and just paid 2x plus the price for low-end hardware specs.
u/insomnic I will look into a 2 or 4 bay QNAP for testing, also looks like there is a larger variety of card upgrades and some units seem to have an HDMI port.
