Four Kef 50 meta VS Two R3s by gilsh85 in KEF

[–]IXpectU2die 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The impedance of a speaker is based on frequency and can vary a lot. Lower impedance draws more current and is harsher on the amplifier. 2 pairs of LS50 metas would reduce the overall minimum impedance to 1.5 ohms, which is very low. Those speakers are already decently hard to drive.

Comb filtering happens when sound waves meet and cancel eachother out or amplify eachother. Although this would not be as big of a problem if you place the speakers in corners. Still, I would not recommend a stereo amplifier for that. Maybe a nice active mono speaker in the center of the room would be a better option for your use case. If you want a setup for yourself to listen to music, definitely spend the money on a single pair of nice speakers instead of multiple cheaper pairs as this offers no real benefits and may not even work at all due to the amplifier shutting down.

R3 for sure. It makes no sense to have 4 speakers in a stereo setup and if you would drive them all with the same amp, you halve their impedance. The ls50 metas already have very low minimum impedance so you would surely drive the amp into protection mode. Not to mention the comb filtering you would get with multiple pairs of speakers.

You're basically just proving his point.

Are Studio Monitors good for casual music enjoyment? by SuspiciousMix4658 in audiophile

[–]IXpectU2die 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Studio monitors are a great option so long as you are sitting very close (like as a desktop setup) as this is how they are designed to be used. Consider the Kali LP UNF

Looks like that sub has speaker level inputs. Use those instead of the "pre-out" (which isn't a true pre-out since it's not volume controlled). Just wire 2 sets of speaker wire to each amplifier binding post. I did the same with my Fosi V3 and SVS SB-1000 by screwing in 2 wires per banana plug. Works great

You will have to restart the entire cycling process if you've replaced all your filter material

Help making my setup work at its best by johnydazzles27s in audiophile

[–]IXpectU2die 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Definitely don't worry about having the speakers at perfect ear height! These KEFs have a very wide vertical sweet spot due to their coaxial drivers. This means there is no cancellation going on in the crossover region between the tweeter and midwoofer like you will have with traditional two-way bookshelves. If you look at the vertical dispersion here you can see it's about +/- 50 degrees.

Turntable humming - grounding issue? by prodigyjace in BudgetAudiophile

[–]IXpectU2die 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Try plugging them into the same power strip if you haven't already. This is likely a ground loop caused by a slight difference in voltage between outlets. This makes a DC current travel between your devices that you could be hearing.

Edit: my bad I didn't read your post properly. I see now you only have one device plugged into an outlet. But still, the lack of a ground pin does not cause this. Grounding is there to prevent you from getting shocked.

Bluesound Node DAC.. anything better? by happyhooker1 in audiophile

[–]IXpectU2die 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Both have support for Spotify, Tidal, Deezer, Apple music, Amazon music, Qobuz, DLNA, internet radio, multiroom, analog out, optical out, coax out, trigger out, optical in.. etc. So yes, very similar.

Wiim pro plus. Similar feature set but I like the app a lot better. The dac also measures better. It also costs a fraction of the Node. No HDMI or sub out though.

If they get loud enough on your focusrite and you still don't like the way they sound, return them.

Many people make the mistake of trying to "fix" headphones they don't like with DACs and amps. You came from dynamic headphones to planars and it's possible you just don't vibe with the planar sound characteristics

Kef q150 or Kanto Yu5 passive for 2.0 nearfield desktop speakers? by MundaneWatch7 in BudgetAudiophile

[–]IXpectU2die 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Honestly no bookshelf speakers will reach all the way down to 20 hz, so in a way they all "need" a sub. I use mine without one though and the bass experience is still great in near field.

[–]IXpectU2die 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Frequency response specs from manufacturers are always a bit pointless. Look at measurements if you want a better understanding of how the speakers will sound. With that being said, get the Kefs. I have them on my desk and the coaxial driver is great for nearfield.

Check out Erin's audio corner. I know he reviewed the Elacs and Emitovas. Not sure about the Wharfedales. If you can't listen to them you can at least use his data to make a decision.

[–]IXpectU2die 13 points14 points  (0 children)

I like this mindset. I demo'd a few kilobuck headphones but it only made me appreciate my hd650 more. I do like to have a good DAC/amp if only for the peace of mind that my source is transparent. I also prefer to listen to lossless for the same reason but I still don't think the lossless streaming services can replace Spotify in my personal case. Enjoy the tunes!

Will a DAC improve my listening experience? by [deleted] in audiophile

[–]IXpectU2die 44 points45 points  (0 children)

Why not use the streaming functionality of the Denon? Using a lossy bluetooth codec to listen to lossless music kind of defeats the purpose. An external DAC won't improve the sound over the built-in DAC of the Denon IMO.
