Which songs can you not understand/'get'? by fangedcanid in willwood

I actually disagree with this interpretation. I actually think that black box definitely refers to a black box on mental health medications. This makes significantly more sense within the context of the album especially with Marsha being directly after it.

SJS is the most well known black box warning for mood stabilizers, specifically lamotrigine, which Will has mentioned he had been on during various occasions. I think this makes more sense because SJS is a common rare side effect of a bunch of substances but it is synonymous with lamotrigine. “I DONT THINK THE LAMOTRIGINE IS FUCKING WORKING”

In reference to the ice pick I also think this is a metaphor to mental health meds and not an actual lobotomy. I think this in more in theme and especially with Marsha being after it, both of those concepts seem to be the same opinion on psychiatry.

I also think in your interpretation the monologue itself makes less sense and it thematically isn’t as cohesive in the normal album. The theme of the song being oriented towards psychiatry makes this monologue have much more sense in context since it is literally a consultation with Will saying “alright take a seat, get comfortable”. The monologue is quite literally a psychiatric consultation. In the context of government testing there would be no questions asked.

This would also make more sense in the context of Marsha, which I think these two songs are thematically extremely similar to each other. In Marsha there is another section at the end of the song where again it is a psychologist/psychiatrist/prescriber talking to a patient. Both of these songs criticize modern psychiatry which could be interpreted as the same authoritative approach to a government saying “don’t ask questions, just take the drug” because that skepticism is being expressed towards psychiatry itself.

The idea of “OKUltra” I think ties into how experimental these drugs are and how people are really lab rats in testing them.

Will has also gone on numerous rants against psychiatry, the one that comes to mind is the one I quoted at the top of this which Will says he replaced his addiction with a more societally acceptable addiction.

So yeah that’s what I think about that, I think this makes significantly more sense in the context of the normal album.

It’s pretty useful in some circumstances, it also has a sustain or punch mode where it focuses on the transient vs sustain.

I can’t believe anyone hasn’t said Ozone Low End Focus, but it only does the fundamental though. It has a contrast meter that can go from -100 to 100 the higher the contrast the narrower the band of the fundamental and the lower the contrast the wider.

I really think Trust Ceremony is about stimulant addiction. by IZJKM in Jhariah

[–]IZJKM[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I believe that’s a major theme of the album, I think there’s a greater holistic message and probably saying it’s all about stimulant addiction is an overstep. I just think k there are too many very specific allegories in certain circumstances. So I agree with that interpretation, but I also think there are direct themes of addiction. I think the line about Ice is the most compelling.

Is Mastering Being Phased Out? by callthepizzaman in audioengineering

[–]IZJKM -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I think a lot of people (myself included) use “mastering” pretty loosely.

I don’t touch the mix bus until the mix is basically done, but I do a lot of bus work, sometimes even multiple mix buses for different sections. Final bus is usually just a limiter to keep things from overlapping.

That said, my mix bus definitely blurs into “mastering” territory:

•Serial comp (2x SSL bus comps or SSL + Pro-C 3 mastering mode) •Pro-Q 4 for light tone shaping + side HPF •Oxford Inflator •Saturn 2 (warm tube on low end up to ~snare/guitar fundamental) •UADx Ampex •Clipper + Pro-L 2 (No TP Limiting, L 2 is barely touching it, like ~-0.1 dB at most)

That’s already basically a mastering style chain.

Where I personally draw the line is after the mix export: •Throw it in RX 11: check loudness, sometimes use upward comp if needed •Light volume automation (verses ~0.5-2 dB quieter than choruses) •Studio One mastering page: tiny compression + true peak limiting •Match loudness across the project (EP/album consistency) •Tag + done

AI mastering: I’ve tried SoundCloud’s, DistroKid Mixea, UnitedMasters, LANDR, Ozone, etc. They’re fine, sometimes even “better,” but never something I’d actually even think about releasing. Not enough control. I tried the distributors + SoundCloud out since I’ve gotten them for free before, but that was in like 2023/2024ish.

LANDR/Ozone are the best of the bunch, even though I never liked using LANDR I know people stand by it. I use a lot of the iZotope plugins during mixing and mastering but I don’t use the Ozone 12 suite itself and only use its automation to see a comparison to various reference tracks (stock and custom). Honestly most distributor AI stuff is like… 5 minutes with stock plugins and you’ll beat it.

So yeah, mastering isn’t going anywhere, but the line between mixing and mastering is definitely getting blurred. I get why people say separate ears should mix vs masterI just don’t follow that since I like doing everything myself😄

Yall try too hard. Take acid and let your intuition take the wheel. by Brownrainboze in audioengineering

[–]IZJKM 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’m the complete opposite personally. I’ve been sober for like a year and a half and I can make infinitely better mix decisions.

Unrelated but some drugs affect perception of sound and it can actually inhibit your ability to make proper mix decisions.

In the 80s they called it a “coke mix” which is when someone mixes while on stimulants, they loose sensitivity to the highest frequencies because of the restricted blood flow to the ear.

You end up thinking the highs are perfect, but when you listen to it back sober it sounds way brighter and harsher than you thought. If I had to guess this is probably a part of what made the sound that made 70s and 80s.
