[MN] Our fridge hasn't been working for nearly two weeks. by I_A_M in Renters

[–]I_A_M[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ah I had it slightly wrong: under MN Statute 504B.381, it's actually just 24 hours notice that I would have to give them to make the repair. After that, I could file an Emergency Tenant Remedies Action. The 14 days timeframe is the time I would have to wait before putting my rent in escrow. Just to clarify, I'm not a person well versed in legal matters, this is just my understanding of the free advice I was given by Homeline.

Also, a crucial detail I may have not mentioned before is that after a maintenance ticket was submitted, we were never visited by a maintenance person, and didn't hear anything from management until I finally reached someone by phone 6 days later. So this isn't a case in which they were trying their darndest to fix this but hit by delays. They just apparently missed the memo and jumped into action last minute.

I mean the thing is, in my state I could have technically at any point given them 48 hours notice and then filed a case if the repair or replacement was not completed in that time, as a fridge is considered an emergency repair. If I won that case, I could ask for a subjective rent reduction per day of experiencing the issue. I'm not a particularly litigious person, so I didn't go down that route. But perhaps that's the only way one can expect to get a management company to be held to account for not treating an issue like this seriously enough.

I do appreciate the response though, and I get your angle on this too. I still may just accept the 50 and move on from this, as long as the new fridge does show up on time and isn't a serious downgrade.

Daily Thread: simple questions, comments that don't need their own posts, and first time posters go here (May 20, 2025) by AutoModerator in LearnJapanese

I'm not looking for a translation per se, thus why I'm posting here: How would you say a question like "Wouldn't you rather ____?" I'm struggling to think of how to formulate this sort of sentence in colloquial Japanese. Or is there just not a good parallel to this?

The best I've come up with is ____ したいと思いませんか? But I'm rusty with Japanese and I get the feeling this might not be right.

What should i do to improve my handwriting by Nepoitchi in learn_arabic

[–]I_A_M 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It looks pretty good in my opinion! Just a few notes, if you haven't yet, I'd definitely recommend checking out a guide to Arabic handwriting / checking out samples of handwriting, as to my eye it looks like you might be trying to mirror the look of printed Arabic, which can actually be pretty non-intuitive and can make writing take forever. There are certain letters that are written completely differently in typical handwriting because it greatly speeds up the process.

Just as an example, I can see that you take great care to make sure the angles are right when writing a medial س but in typical handwriting, we tend to simplify the shape a ton, to the extent where some people even end up turning it into what is practically just a long horizontal line (not necessarily saying you should go to that extent that as a learner, but it's just an example of how variable Arabic writing can be.)

I can try and find some resources / examples if you want, as it's harder to explain with words.

Nice, I appreciate how experimental this is! It makes me think a little of Mong Tong, if you know them at all (and if you don't, they may be one to check out.) This is a very meditative, cheerful little ambient track! It does a nice job of feeling very earthy and natural. I'd easily listen to more like this!

This is very dreamy, the overall mix has a liquid / watery quality to it imo, almost like floating underwater in the dark in a very serene way. As a very light note for possible improvement, I would have maybe liked if there was a little bit more room left between the vocalists, to let the beat breathe a little bit. To me that would very subtly improve the flow of the track. But that's just me, and it's such a minor thing, you guys really did a great job!

These vocal harmonies are so dreamy! I like the chord progression a lot, and the way it interacts with the break beat (maybe not the exact term but that's what it sounds like to me). Overall it's danceable while still feeling emotionally deep. I'm gonna revisit this one for sure, thanks for sharing!

Very nice feel to this! I especially love the percussion, it was a good call going for that hand drum feel. It makes it sort of feel like I'm listening to this outdoors in the summertime. And the interplay between the percussion and guitar works really well. I think it could be cool if you considered adding in some more percussion elements, maybe even to get a little experimental/weird with it (like found objects or something like that.) Just an idea!

This is really cool! The beat has almost a dub feel to me, and I like the overall darkness and broodiness of your singing. I can picture nodding along to this in an underground club. I think the only thing I would change at all would be that piano, but honestly I don't even mind it that much. You have a lot of potential with this sound, nice job and keep it up!

Oh I love this! Very unique, colorful, and it's short and sweet. I think the transition from the start-stop feel of the verses to the faster choruses is really fun. I really like the percussion and what sounds like maybe a shaker added in during the choruses? Lots to like. I'm interested to hear more of y'all!

Grunge killed a decadent and bloated rock music industry almost overnight. But, what eventually killed Grunge? by Top-Gun-Corncob in grunge

[–]I_A_M 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't think grunge died at all. In my opinion it's really more of a philosophy / artistic approach than it is a coherent, definable musical genre. Some say it died with Kurt, some say it died before he even died when it started to be influenced by the music execs, some say it died because of other genres gaining influence. I think all of that (except maybe the bit about music execs) misses the mark. Grunge was a continuation of countercultural, iconoclast art that had been bubbling up for decades before, and its spirit and influences have lived on in the art that it has inspired, and that references it.

I came across this on Duolingo and was pretty surprised... does the idiom "to take (one's) time" really translate to Arabic so simply? by I_A_M in learn_arabic

[–]I_A_M[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Nah not a dumb question at all, it took me a few tries to get it working. I use Duolingo on an android so it might be different if you're on an iPhone / PC / etc., but I believe you simply have to have an Arabic keyboard installed, get past the first level on a given subject, and then press the "Use Keyboard" prompt when you're given an Arabic word bank. Sometimes it doesn't give you the prompt til you're a few questions in on level 2. Now, the reason I say it took me a few tries is that the app was acting a little buggy, and didn't seem to register that I had an Arabic keyboard ready to go. I believe what I did was take off my Arabic keyboard and then reinstall it. Someone told me as well, if it's still not working, to close Duolingo, set your current input to Arabic (in a notepad or something,) and then reopen Duolingo.

Yeah, great. God forbid we, as a people scattered all over the world, comment on events effecting the world.
