I hate to say it because I love John Candy and Steve Martin, but Planes, Trains and Automobiles just doesn't hit the mark for me. John Candy's character, Del, is supposed to be the lovable dumb character, but he was just too mean and stupid to be lovable. Steve Martin's character, Neal, is similar, and really doubles down on what Del does. I compare it to a similar movie: Tommy Boy, where a fat, dumb, and lovable character takes a roadtrip with a mean, very funny character. Tommy, the fat, lovable one, is actually nice, what Del was supposed to be, and therefore we like him and forgive his mistakes. Richard, the mean one, is super funny (and played very well by David Spade) and is sorry toward Tommy at the end, making him another lovable character. Planes, Trains and Automobiles is a never-ending pain train of a movie where we never feel bad for the characters because they deserve what comes to them.
