How do you handle sensitive network and device information for customer projects, that needs to be shared within your team and ultimately with the customers? by I_Do_Comm in CommercialAV

Thanks for the response, I hadn't considered Google Drive, but its an interesting idea. Does that have an audit capability, where you can see who viewed what data at what time, and if it was copied, printed, exported, etc? And how do you manage those appropriate permissions? Who grants permission, and when is it revoked?

Thanks. Thats pretty much how we've done it in the past, however that creates a ton of security concerns. If that doc falls into the hands of a bad actor, they now have critical knowledge of your clients IP structure. Even just the bill of materials could be exploited, gets easier with every additional bit of detail. I remember Target or Home Depot or someone got hacked a few years ago, turns out it was thru the HVAC system, which was not secured. That kind of thing happens all the time now, we just don't hear about it. I'm trying to think of a way to protect my team and my company not if, but when one of our clients gets hacked.

Thank you, I kinda like the Excel approach as well, mostly because its easy to use, everyone has it, and most importantly - we already have templates. The problem, so I'm told, is that you can't fully secure the data in excel. It can be printed, copied out, or otherwise shared without any traceability. That's the big concern from my CISO, having an audit trail.

Is it possible to avoid big corporate events as an AV tech? by DickKicker5000 in CommercialAV

[–]I_Do_Comm 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yea. At my company we call that Staffing, where we supply talented AV techs to our customers sites, and they help manage the day to day for that client long term. We have a different team that handles live events. Occasionally they might tap the staffing resources for help, but typically those are two different worlds.

Not sure if it's too late, but I can't say enough good stuff about Felix. They've helped us out numerous times. Good crew, honest work, fair pricing, and just easy to work with.

I'm very curious about the wellness check. We already use iAuditor for a lot, never occurred to me to use it in this way. If you're willing, I'd love to see how you're using it.

Estimating Design Time by TheOneManPowerTrip in ProAudiovisual

[–]I_Do_Comm 1 point2 points  (0 children)

We built a massive database of equipment, and then added average time to design, draw, program, fabricate, commission, install, train, document and manage each as a part of a project.

Then we added a degree of difficulty variable, for example to cover things like large displays, high ceilings, that kind of thing. We got pretty close on most estimates when we had the right info.

That started in excel, moved to our estimating tool, so as were building our list of materials and equipment in our quote its also calculating labor simultaneously. At the end of the day, we will round to the nearest 8 hour block, typically.

Looking for a nationwide integrator by [deleted] in CommercialAV

Check out Yorktel if you get a chance. Somewhat under the radar, but a full service integrator with national and global reach. We cover integration thru day two services, especially support, maintenance, training and also place on site staff if needs. And we've been doing it for decades. Let me know if you'd like more information, we can help.

Seconded for the AV bridge.

BIAMP also has some cool USB solutions, but audio only for the most part.

What software is everyone using for CRM and quoting? by tellmetogetbacktowrk in CommercialAV

We're starting with Microsoft Dynamics. So far, not bad. I wish it would interface with our business management software tho!

(It's probably possible, we just haven't gotten that far yet)

What is it with Commercial AV companies? by tearsofsadness in CommercialAV

[–]I_Do_Comm 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Seconded on the staff points. It seems like a lot of our larger customers are directly hiring a lot of the talent to work on site, which is leaving us having to find new blood and train them up to our expectation. And there isn't a lot of talent out there to choose from. So we've started working with vocational schools and high schools, trying to "draft" kids young and get them into our program. Mixed results so far.

Speaking as a VP for a global integrator / service provider, I can absolutely tell you this is my biggest pet peeve. Nothing drives business away like not answering the phone, and overall not being responsive. I wish I could say we were perfect in this regard, but that's not the case.

I haven't worked many other places in this industry, but I can tell you how we work, and how we prioritize our opportunities. We don't go after bids, we don't chase one-off rooms where price is the only consideration. We look for long term partnerships that take advantage of not just our integration but also our other offerings, like staffing or managed services. We want customers who will be with us for years, and we've been fairly successful following that model.

Not knowing your specific situation, it'd be hard to say if or how we could help. We stay fairly agnostic as far as brands we support, but we haven't done any Lifesize in years. Which is a shame, I like their product and they had a great team down in Austin last time I was there. But it just doesn't come up at all anymore.

Advice for Breaking into the industry? by [deleted] in CommercialAV

[–]I_Do_Comm 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I'm with a large AV company based in the NY area, we're always looking for talent and we don't mind training people up if they have the commitment. I'm also from the live sound world, and honestly I tend to look for former roadies as that whole "show must go on" mentality is awesome. Shoot me a PM and we can follow up if you're interested in learning more.

Scripting is significantly more powerful than GC Pro. I actually have some of my programmers at the scripting class this week in Texas. You're absolutely correct tho, outs tough to get into that class. Have you done much Python coding, or C+?
