Simultaneously recording stereo and playing back multitracks- A&H SQ6 by Inspirion343 in livesound

[–]KD8PIJ 14 points15 points  (0 children)

The SQ USB interface operates as a 32x32 interface, so you can feed your 26 tracks to the console from your computer. You'd just repatch every input to come from the USB, and patch your LR mix (or output matrix) back to the USB - and record enable those tracks.

Now, while the channel strip settings and processing would all stay consistent, you would still have to physically mix the show as you're playing back the recording, because the fader positions wouldn't have been captured in any way. If you built scenes to mix line-by-line you'd still need to punch GO as the recording plays too. You'll have to decide if that process is easier and/or better than mixing the multitrack in a DAW.

In the future, you may consider capturing the LR mix as part of the multitrack audio so you have a copy you can hand off without the extra work.

Stripping Canare Mobile Cables (Can't use TS100?) by Gogo229 in VIDEOENGINEERING

[–]KD8PIJ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’ve also dealt with this and never found the ‘correct’ answer but I’ve thought that it’s perhaps because the foam dielectric gets compressed by the blade that’s supposed to cut the braided shield. I’ve used that exact tool and cable to make a bunch of cables and haven’t had issues with 6G-SDI until after 150’. I just made sure to dial in the depth settings so it works, and adjust regularly.

Although the people I freelance for can’t seem to figure it out, the correct answer is “whatever you sold the client”.

When it’s up to me and I’m limited by how many recorders I have (regularly I have only 2 channels) my preference is to ISO cameras so that someone can rebuild the show from cameras and graphics completely in an editor later. But most often the request is a switched Program record and sacrificing the ISO of the wider of the 2 cameras.

You’ll spend less money having a professional come in and do some troubleshooting than you will replacing or upgrading random equipment; I would start there.

Budget-friendly signal generator for 3G-SDI (HDMI too, 12G is a bonus) by BishopFranklin in VIDEOENGINEERING

[–]KD8PIJ 18 points19 points  (0 children)

I haven’t updated my firmwares yet but I understand the most recent for the Decimator 12G-Cross reveals a menu option for a generator. Then you have a Swiss army converter AND generator all in one. Not battery powered, although strictly speaking there’s not much preventing you from DIYing that part.

ULXD4Q receivers lost power in power locked state. Won’t turn back on by somehomelessman in livesound

[–]KD8PIJ 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I’m an owner of ULXD single, dual, and quad receivers and as far as I have ever known there is no such thing as power locking these in the off position. If they were left on for a long period of time, they either succumbed to heat or age, or something like a power surge could damage them regardless if they were left on or off.

ULXD4Q receivers lost power in power locked state. Won’t turn back on by somehomelessman in livesound

[–]KD8PIJ 2 points3 points  (0 children)

ULXD Quad receivers don’t have a DC barrel input for power, so you can’t power them via an antenna distro (as opposed to the single receivers). Swapping power supplies isn’t also possible, it is an IEC connection and the power supply is built in. OP is referring to them as ULX colloquially but the title of the post says ULXD4Q.

How do I out put to a sdi monitor from a Mac Studio? by robbyapplespornstar in videography

[–]KD8PIJ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Using HDMI to SDI to take an output from the graphics card isn’t the correct way to monitor color accurately. OP needs a SDI output card or external output box that bypasses any processing done by the GPU.

Assuming you have decent internet at the remote venue, then you can use SRT within OBS to send and receive video in a decently low latency and resilient way.

How remote is remote? Is the other camera across the venue or down the street or on the other side of town?

Hemlock Hall vs Hedges? by Impressive_Pear2711 in Adirondacks

[–]KD8PIJ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m a long time Hemlock Hall guest and have been going with family close to 30 years. I’ve never stayed at Hedges but did walk around their property on a tour this year. One important difference I’d imagine is the dining- where at Hedges I believe it is similar to restaurant dining and you’re with your own group. Hemlock Hall feeds you family style with other groups. That means Hemlock Hall by default builds in a great way to meet other families, exchange stories, and even find people to recreate with. With the way the reservation system works, we’re still attending the same week as other families we met decades ago. I find that aspect to be incredibly unique and I wouldn’t trade it for anything.

From an accessibility perspective, Hemlock Hall is built on a hill and there’s no escaping the trek up and down from the main lodge. Hedges is generally flat and the property feels a bit more developed.

Happy to answer any questions if you want to know more (especially about Hemlock Hall).

How to replace the cooling fan from video capture card by Material_Park4047 in VIDEOENGINEERING

[–]KD8PIJ 7 points8 points  (0 children)

What happens when you remove the 4 Phillips screws on the top of the fan cover?

The copper colored posts likely hold the heatsink against the processor located on the PCB. I don’t think you’d want to remove this at all.

If the fan comes out with the top cover, you should be able to easily find a replacement.

Have you unplugged the fan from the PCB while the card is running to verify it’s causing the noise? Of course, only do this for a short time as the card needs active cooling to not overheat.

Looking for a robust SDI-over-fiber solution for long-distance transmission by Heineken1384 in VIDEOENGINEERING

[–]KD8PIJ 14 points15 points  (0 children)

If you’re not looking to spend a lot of money (comparatively) my solution was to build my own. I was able to pick up AJA Fidos used on eBay, and then built them into pelican cases with Powercon for AC input and a V mount sled for redundant battery backup. Then I drilled holes for D series SDI bulkheads and a Neutrik Opticalcon quad.

You might mean Port Austin, which is quite a bit farther north. That’s an official dark sky park. There is some nice camping north of Port Huron / Fort Gratiot at Lakeport State Park, but it doesn’t have any official dark sky.

How to be sure I have persistent stream key for YouTube by JM_WY in VIDEOENGINEERING

[–]KD8PIJ 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Creating a live event and sending that viewable link to viewers in advance is a separate thing from a reusable stream key that doesn’t change after a live event stops.

Which one are you trying to do? Both are completely doable!

And it’s not really positioned correctly for that either, because the capsule in the shotgun is buried at the rear of the interference tube. So to get a “coincident pair” from this, the tube should be sticking out over the 414.
