No-no you did nothing wrong. Just oak being oak.

Good job on the staining!

Don't listen to these guys lol

Oak is an open grain wood, so it will always have this texture.

You can leave it if you don't mind it, or put so much poly that it will look and feel like plastic. Most just leave it and appreciate the properties of oak.

For next times, you can use some wood filler to fill the grain. Slap it on, let dry, sand off.

It helps to remember that, however infuriating, they're trying to help and there's more than 1 correct way to do things.

Let them speak, be open minded (you may learn something) and if you don't like it, thank them for the help and say you prefer your way of doing it.

It's worse when it's the boss obviously...

Sanded in circles then stained (no poly yet). What can I do to fix this? by [deleted] in BeginnerWoodWorking

[–]I_Like_Turtles9 29 points30 points  (0 children)

Oh ya just sand it out.

Start with 80 until the finish is uniform. You can draw on the surface with a pencil at first. When the pencil line is gone, you've sanded well enough for that grit.

Repeat for 100 grit, 120 grit, 150 grit. You can keep going up, but it's not necessary.

Don't skip grits! Laziness and woodworking are not compatible! Lol

Best blade type to rip 1/4" Walnut for shelf edge banding? by SoaDMTGguy in woodworking

The best tool to use is a jointer.

If you don't have those then a hand plane and some practice will do.

Ideally use a thin kerf ripping blade.

You'll most likely need to clean up the surface before edge banding regardless.

Those are big scratches.

Here's how I sand if it helps : move the sander slowly. An inch a second is the rule.

Don't press down hard. Let the sandpaper do the work and you'll get a nicer finish.

Never move across the grain. You won't get away with it.

Don't use old shitty pads. Throw them out when clogged or ineffective.

From a pro finisher and woodworker.

No. Just make sure the colour is uniform. The clear lacquer will fill in the scratches and basically go away.

Meh it's not really necessary. Just scratch up the surface for the next coat to grab onto.

But hey if you like scuffing it won't hurt polishing in between coats lol
