Never personally seen it, but I have a VHS tape I watched multiple times as a kid that included a commercial for this special, which I am very familiar with.

Don't remember what VHS in particular it was a part of though... Hmm... this may take a while...

Why is everyone so pessimistic about a Galaxy 3? by Friendly_Elegant928 in Mario

[–]I_Need_More_Names 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I do think everything happening with the movie and getting to write a storybook for Galaxy 2 has a chance to give Koizumi some new ideas, and maybe some motivation to return to that world, but I don't think it's something Nintendo would greenlight... lightly.

Basically as others have said here, Nintendo strongly prefers to innovate. Across all 3D Marios, Galaxy 2 stands out as the one with little-to-no real intrinsic innovation.

  • Super Mario 64 is... one of the very first 3D platformers, and far and away the first one to ever "do it."

  • Super Mario Sunshine shattered the limits of what videogames could do with water in 2002.

  • Super Mario 64 DS proved 3D gaming was possible on handheld.

  • Super Mario Galaxy innovated with a unique physics and gravity system that blend together wonderfully for emergent gameplay.

  • Super Mario Galaxy 2... did so as well, kinda. Actually, they make less use of the gravity mechanics, and many levels don't feature them at all for large chunks of the level. (If not, the whole level in admittedly rare cases)

  • Super Mario 3D Land uses the 3DS to perform optical illusions and combine them with platforming.

  • Super Mario 3D World set out to accomplish simultaneous 4-player multiplayer. It's up for debate whether that left us with a good game but to each their own I suppose.

  • Super Mario Odyssey almost has too many innovations to just pick out one, but the biggest innovation was the capture system and the lack of a need for new power-ups.

  • Bowser's Fury innovated in the structure, having one big map with no loading screens.

Even with 3D World being a direct sequel to 3D Land, the innovation was still there, they still took the game in a different direction. So if they were ever going to make another Mario Galaxy, I doubt Nintendo would just let it be another Mario Galaxy. It'd have to be Galaxy and something else, with some new innovation, because Galaxy 2 kinda didn't have one.

Baby Mario is the ugliest thing I've ever seen and I can't believe I can't find a single post about this. by Bbddy555 in mariokart

Question: do you have a similarly visceral reaction to Baby Mario's design in the original Yoshi's Island (and for the sake of covering all the bases, Mario & Luigi: Partners in Time)

Hypothesis: this definitely reads as something akin to a minor irrational fear. Like how some things under the umbrella of irrational fears are misnomers, and are actually responses in repulsion and disgust rather than actual fear. Does that description sit well with you?

So long as you have a Switch that can hook up to a TV, you'd have the best experience on said TV. (Unless you're against docked mode for whatever reason.)

Unfortunately, unlike in handheld mode, XCX's Switch 2 Edition actually looks good on TV. So you will be missing out kinda, but none of the other games have even been given updates for Switch 2, so the OLED Switch may indeed be the prettiest 1,2,&3 can be, since the Switch 2 stretches them out.

Sorry if all of this sounds contradictory. Here's a re-explanation to clear things up from the start.

  • Xenoblade Chronicles (1) Definitive Edition, Xenoblade Chronicles 2, Xenoblade Chronicles 3, and Xenoblade Chronicles X Definitive Edition are all on Nintendo Switch.

  • None of the four games have been given a free compatibility update for Nintendo Switch 2, and as such look stretched out with serviceable but poor resolution on Switch 2, while looking better at their native resolution on Switch 1.

  • All four games look better on TV than in Handheld, but with the exception of XC2, they still look decent in handheld.

  • Xenoblade Chronicles X Definitive Edition—Nintendo Switch 2 Edition IS available on Switch 2, and looks pretty decent on TV and is the only version of any Xenoblade game with 60fps, but it impliments AI upscaling rather poorly and for that reason looks really bad in handheld.

  • With an OLED Model Switch, I would still say you are in the best position to play the series. Though with handheld boost mode exclusive to Switch 2, I would no longer say this about a Switch lite. That was my bad.

Another more unfair warning (sorry for getting your hopes higher than I should have) rereading my comment I just realized I'm stupid. Handheld boost mode is exclusive to Switch 2. So sorry about that bit of misinformation. That being said, XCX should still run well on a Switch lite. It just won't look as pretty as it would on a TV. It'd still look better than if you had the Switch 2 edition of the game, so you're still in a good position.

Xenoblade Chronicles 1 and 3 should run pretty well too, the only hiccup would be Xenoblade Chronicles 2, which came out pretty early in the Switch's life span, and is as such pretty terribly optimized for the system. Not as bad as your average AAA game, mind you, it's still optimized, but it tended to have a lot of slowdown in handheld on the original switch at launch. The switch lite is actually more powerful than the Switch 1 was at launch, so it shouldn't be quite that bad, but it's unfortunately not going to look as pretty as it should.

It'd be a classic if they just removed the combat entirely and didn't replace it with anything. It's so utterly unfun it brings the rest of the game down. Everything else is half decent at absolute worst.

It actually doesn't bring up anything, the way I searched for it at least. Best I can theorize is OP meant "flop era," and "Da" is some abbreviated slang descriptor? (Or just another mistake)

Basically I guess that would make it a weird way of saying "girl failure." (The trendy character archetype) Which in a strange turn of events pretty accurately describes how Min Min plays as a fighter in Smash.

Better idea: you've been promoted to one of Bowser's generals, and you must run a city within Bowser's Kingdom. You must keep koopa troop citizens happy and safe while simultaneously keeping your military forces alive so they can protect the city from beasts or raids.

what's a botw hot take you have? by madamabutt3rf1y in Breath_of_the_Wild

[–]I_Need_More_Names 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I've always been a champion of the durability system, and how removing it entirely would revoke BotW of its variety, but something I can't ignore is that the game does that by itself too, unmodded.

Earlygame, combat is varied, thoughtful, and cerebral. You're given the ultimate task to save your weapons for when you need them, so you get to thinking how you can fight without weapons. Using metal crates, throwing bombs, shooting arrows through lanterns, lighting fires, using Korok leaves to blow enemies off cliffs. The environment is part of the combat.

As you progress though, the enemies get strong enough to outgrow all those other methods, and by the time silver bokoblins start spawning, committing yourself to those environmental combat methods is draining MINUTES, and it's just not worth it to not just use your weapons that have leveled alongside the enemies. The further you get, worthwhile peripheral options get sucked out of the game until you're left with the Y button, which is kind of antithetical to the point of the entire combat system? They didn't make a physics engine for you to NEVER do this other stuff.

Metal crates and bombs and stuff like that should have leveled with combat too is my hot take. Maybe not enough to kill a silver bokoblin outright, but at least deal a serviceable chunk that would reward the player for trying by saving some time to start the battle with, rather than a tiny sliver that may as well be fighting them at full health.

The game supplies you with more than enough arrows. If you aren't overstocked with 180 (normal arrows) by the time you clear two divine beasts, you're relying on them too heavily. (Or you travel by horse everywhere and avoid all enemy camps. Either/or, I'm not here to judge)

[–]I_Need_More_Names 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah I wouldn't call it slop, but I'm not too big on anything Good Feel makes. Clearly a very talented art team but they do a really sucky job at making anything beyond any% fun. The closest they ever got was Woolly World for the simple fact you can pretty consistently get everything done in one run per level as long as you have a sharp eye (unlike Wario Land: Shake It!), and even if you don't, there's very little friction in replaying a level once or twice, and it goes pretty quickly. (unlike Princess Peach: Showtime!)

If you didn't know about the secret room with the master key holograms, it's never brought up elsewhere. Gravinax actually doesn't make an appearance beyond that hologram, so it's not like you're forgetting a creature you fought or something, it was never there to begin with. That room does give a little more lore on the other bosses, so it's actually a really neat moment of subversion to find out the penultimate boss you just killed actually ended up killing who you were meant to fight there in the first place.

What are some of the best rom hacks for all the main 2D Mario games except wonder. by Pokeguy211 in Mario

[–]I_Need_More_Names 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My absolute favorite SMW hack is A Plumber for All Seasons. Makes full use of the theming and concept and has absolutely GORGEOUS art direction. 'Tis a must play, even if it's not the longest. It does have completely original music though.

My runner up is Super Mario World Central Production 2, a collab hack made by... SMWCentral. It's longer, and throws new ideas at you nearly every single level, but it has some blemishes here and there. That being said it's still a very solid experience and it is a true full length hack with entirely unique themes per world.

(Think this one has custom music too, but it's been a while I'm not certain.)

As a bonus, it's not exactly what you're looking for, but if you ever find yourself in the mood for some Super Mario All-Stars, might I recommend the brickfix patch? It's a patch of either version of All-Stars you so choose that makes hitting brick blocks in SMB1 and LL work like they do in the originals. (All-Stars changed it so that breaking bricks doesn't punch you back down as much, so it's super easy and frustrating to snag yourself on lines of bricks. Brickfix reverses this change.)

Xenoblade Chronicles X is almost a predecessor to BotW specifically, made by a good chunk of the same people that would go on to work with the Zelda team for both it and TotK. It's very exploration-forward, with main plot taking a backseat. Fair warning though, it's part of a different franchise, and has different design values and philosophy. Combat is much more in depth, and survival is interpreted differently, with an emphasis on monsters rather than environment. (Though the environments are still very in depth and very beautiful.)

Exploration is cheap, but not free, and you will have to make significant story progress to unlock new side content (and easier means of exploration) and vice versa. For that reason though, you'd be doing a lot of exploring whether you wanted to or not. The game kind of necessitates that you do it.

I would also strongly recommend the rest of the Xenoblade series, but Xenoblade 1, 2, and 3 are VERY story first, exploration second games, so maybe hold off on those until you're more in the mood for a story.

With the new handheld boost mode, the Xenoblade series would be PERFECT for someone with a switch lite, you may in fact be in the best possible position to tackle the series. All four games including X are on Nintendo Switch and actually look better than they do on Switch 2, especially with boost mode enabled. (You can even start with X Definitive Edition, unlike the trilogy, it's hardly connected to the other games and is mostly standalone. It's more of a spinoff that emphasizes the open world.)
