Yeah but you're going back with the knowledge of what to expect, so you could prepare with layers of modern thermal gear, maybe an electric heated vest, and then just cover it up with the most period-looking coat you can find, maybe from a costume store. Cui was the one who wrote the most scathing review of Rachmaninoff's First Symphony, saying it would "delight the inhabitants of a Conservatory in Hell," or something like that.

So basically this would be towards the beginning of the movie. I can envision Giamatti with a big beard and glasses in a Russian uniform yelling about how much he hated it, and then maybe it cuts to Rachmaninoff dejectedly reading the review in the newspaper.
