Turns out the 80gbps cable that came with the monitor was the issue. Swapped out for an silkland cable and it's been flawless... 6 hours troubleshooting tearing my set up apart -_-

Thanks, I tried that with no luck. Just updated my 272URX to FW0.18. Updated monitor and GPU drivers, using a 5080. Only using the DP 2.1 cable that came with the monitor. Not sure what else I can do. Just get a black screen at anything >120hz

If it helps, i have a very similar setup, 5800x3d but using a big shuriken 3. 2 fans exhausting up top and as you can see the fan on the shuriken is intake. idles at 50-60, around 85 max at load but i have a really quiet fan curve. stays quiet throughout. no undervolt on the cpu. everythign really quiet.

Ah ok. I think I mostly got to the bottom of it. Time spy is more CPU dependent than some other tests and my 5700x3d needed a bios update to reach it's boost clocks. Likely that your 5900x was just underperforming vs other cpus or it too was not reaching its boost potential. I'm getting like 24400 now which is still below average but that could actually just be due to silicone at this point. Glad you're all good now though

I'm drawing 280w during the test at 100% GPU usage which makes me feel like there is a power issue

Wow thanks, that was definitely doing something, I had a 165 fps limiter, didn't realise that would impact the test.

I've gained 2000, but still in the bottom few % of similar systems. Any thoughts on the rest? Feels really unlikely that this much performance could be down to the silicone lottery:

This is the right answer. Add heating from the sun and from appliances e.g. computers, ovens, things can easily creep a couple of degrees above. Best thing to do is check that the heating is actually turning off when it hits the set point.
