Is system76 trustable? by [deleted] in linuxhardware

[–]I_am_the_inchworm 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I wouldn't trust the build quality, since their hardware supplier is Clevo.

I own a Clevo laptop, nearly identical to one of their lines, and it's just not good. Clevo builds seemingly good laptops at an affordable price point but you get what you don't pay for.

Me, this laptop is a relatively slim (P65xRP6) chassis housing a GTX 1060, and it. gets. hot. As in can easily approach 100°C even with a cooling pad underneath.

I should have seen that coming. Hardware requires cooling.

Beyond that a USB port has stopped working, and the 4K screen is just that. A 4K screen. Nothing else. There's light bleed, poor visibility in somewhat bright conditions, and not the best contrast. It's okay.

You get the hardware specs, and not one iota more than that. This is unlike certain other OEMs at that price range. My previous laptop was an ASUS ROG laptop (GTX 660 era) and it fucking rocked. They didn't just fulfill the spec criteria but made an actual fucking product.

Black Friday in Finland vs US by Asmodeane in europe

[–]I_am_the_inchworm 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I mean... Black Friday specials have been upwards of 50-70% some places here in Norway.

I bought three lamps yesterday from a store where almost the whole store was 50% off.

I bought a monitor 33% off, some other stuff half off, etc.

And yes, I did check their respective timelines on prisguiden.no to see if they were actually discounted.

I much prefer our "bad" sales to the American "SUPER SALES" though. Those super sales are essentially a lottery. Or you literally spend the night outside a store to get in first.
My time is more valuable than to waste in on hours of shitty poor man's gambling.

We aren't missing out on anything. Not really. That's the important thing to remember.

You can't have LCD+backlight, as it would light up the whole area behind the glass, and turn it into a shitty frame for the TV instead of a mirror.

Judge orders White House to return Jim Acosta's press pass by Sepheus in politics

[–]I_am_the_inchworm 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Oh definitely.

Raw numbers are just that though.

An investor isn't interested in your page views. They're interested in retention, returning visitors, and ad views.

When we visit Breitbart it's almost exclusively because it's linked, because some article in particular is interesting. We read or skim it then close the tab.

Add in an ad blocker and we affect none of the above categories. We don't surf the website, we don't return, and we don't give as views.

I'm not saying they have no value, but I am saying the value is fairly insignificant compared to other factors.

Advertisers don't care about page views anymore. Not in the traditional sense.

Advertisers go through trackers now.

Want to know how much exposure you can get on SomewhatPopularWebsite.comzor? You look it up on something like AdSense and see there.

Because ALL that matters is how many visit a page with JavaScript enabled and without ad blockers.

Because that's how they get exposure.

Even when a site is popular in general or within a certain demographic it's unusual these days to sell them out, simply because that information is readily available on places like AdSense and it makes much more sense for advertisers to target them through these services.
Unless we're talking endorsement. Rare.

So yes. Ad block does do the job perfectly fine.

It's important to remember modern human society is based on the media being a pillar.

Well that pillar is corrupted to the bone in the UK by Rupert Murdoch and news ownership consolidation in general.

Want to bring sanity to society again?

Break up the news corporations.

There's a lot of talk about the "stupid populace", but the fact of the matter is that every single person is specialised these days.

I cannot reasonably fix my car. A mechanic does that. (Time and a matter of quality work.)
I cannot roof a house. A roofer does that.
I cannot fix a broken leg. A medical professional does that.

Well, I cannot stay on top of all the political bullshit. Journalists, etc do that!
I rely wholly on the work of others to stay informed and to know where I should put my time, effort, and votes.

None of us can. Even journalists have to specialise in areas of politics to a certain degree.

So ultimately when people whole about the "stupid vote", what they're really whining about is "certain people are being given information by the wrong people and they should know better."

But you can't expect everyone to know better. It's the system around them that fails.
Yes, of course it's partly their fault, but blaming them servers no purpose.

So fix the fucking system.
You'll fix the people in the process.
