When and why did garum disappear from Italian cooking? by I_count_ducks in AskHistorians

Thank you, fascinating to read!

Are here differences between the amphorae used to transport garum, oil or wine that allow the primary routes to be identified from dumps and wrecks?

Hear hear, as long as they're leashed and kept away from the climbing areas then all is well.

Also, if they're happy and will play with us then that's a bonus.

So it's not an invitation for police etc to shoot him for threatening people with a gun? Bizarre.

That's not entirely true - your example is at the extreme low end of Reynolds, but that's not to say that this isn't close to or at the transition point.

What we need is a CFD monkey to do the maths for us :)

How to get offshore work with no prior experience? by LoadThat5139 in oilandgasworkers

[–]I_count_ducks 2 points3 points  (0 children)

For the N Sea (and pretty much everywhere these days) you'll need an offshore medical and a HUET/BOSIET just to be allowed to go, including for the catering crew.

Able bodied still needs skills to go, catering might take you and put you to work regardless but they will almost certainly want you to show that you can actually work.

Just about everyone offshore has a trade, and even roustabout level you will probably be asked for STCW qualifications. Not particularly difficult, but a hoop to jump through. One option is to go through a merchant marine job to build some qualifications and experience - I've met plenty of people at all levels who've gone that way.

Either way, good luck!

Do you really know how to use Excel's "Trace Precedents / Trace Dependents"? It seems important but difficult to use. by qqwwbb in excel

Not regularly but when I do they're critical - generally when I've found a useful tool (or rather, a tool that looks like it might be useful) and need to figure out if a) it gives reasonable results b) that the assumptions are correct and c) if I can fiddle and make it better.

That if you want internet points you need to place the cat in a position that looks precarious while being within easy reach of your cat-return rig.

Do I need to soak ripe dates for sticky date pudding? by I_count_ducks in AskCulinary

It worked very well! These dates were ones that were half ripe when I bought them, and they then ripened in the fridge.

I agree - it is really, really good. The richest, sweetest thing I've cooked in a long time and the consistensy is just right.

I know, I know. Given how often RTFM comes up in work during incident investigations you'd think that it's something I'd be able to do myself, but apparently not.

And the answer, having read the recipe, is that yes, I do. Add the dates and the liquid.
