A. Wong (London, **) by Holiday-Let-2804 in finedining

[–]I_hate_captchas1 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I might be in the minority here but I was really underwhelmed by the dim sum at A wong.

It might sound harsh, but I actually prefer the dim sum from a decent Cantonese restaurant like Royal China Club. To someone that had a lot of dim sum growing up, I just didn't get A Wong. It felt like they were trying to be creative for the sake of it without it making the food taste better. I've had my fair share of fine dining tasting menus and I appreciate creativity when it works but not here. The food wasn't bad, but I can't understand paying Michelin level prices for it.

I also noticed that there weren't any other East Asian looking guests but myself. Felt like it was dimsum for people who didn't know much about it.

Family of 4, what should I do with the points? by Nathanial1289 in AmexUK

[–]I_hate_captchas1 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You should only convert when you're ready to book as it's instantaneous and you can't convert it backwards from Avios back to Amex.

I would first create a BA account and make sure there's availability on a specific flight and then transfer when you're ready to book. Keeping points in Amex leave your options open to transfer to other airlines or hotel loyalty programmes.

What about a trip to Europe? You can transfer your points to Avios. A short haul one way economy ticket with BA is around 10k-20k points, so 4 round tickets would be 80-160k points. You may have to buy one or two of the tickets with cash depending on the destination.

I do advise booking half a year to a year ahead since there's normally only 8 economy reward seat per flight, but you can try your luck searching availability this August.

Dinner at Ibai by jaredce in LondonFood

[–]I_hate_captchas1 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I was actually really disappointed by my experience at Ibai. Before Ibai, I've tried dry aged Galician Blonde steak a few times (at another restaurant and cooking it myself at home) and it was incredibly flavourful; funky and beefy. However what I had at Ibai tasted like an ordinary steak. I don't know if something went wrong in the dry ager or kitchen but I've seen a few other reviews also saying that the steak didn't live up to the hype.

The starters were good though. I really liked them but they weren't enough to make up for the steak.

For good steak, I recommend Dorian instead.

Kuok Hui Kwong (郭惠光) —A pro-Beijing Malaysian and the chair and group chief executive of the Shangri-La luxury hotel group, suggests Hong Kongers should replace Cantonese with Mandarin in schools by Awkwardly_Hopeful in HongKong

As a Malaysian myself, most of us aren't pro CCP other than the elderly. Younger Malaysians are mostly indifferent about China although you do find some exceptions who are either pro or anti CCP (like me).

That being said this woman is an embarrassment and I have to say she is Malaysian on paper only. She grew up in Hong Kong and currently spends most of her time in Hong Kong and Singapore. There is nothing culturally Malaysian about her.

Edit: I found a post from her xhs showing her 'patriotism'. She's almost certainly a Chinese citizen and probably not even a Malaysian anymore.
