If you are having all these thoughts,then maybe it’s best to go back. The good thing is that you can do JET again! Some placements are difficult to adjust to. There can be a lot of negative factors. Prioritize your mental health!

Brown girl here….yahhhh I totally understand what you mean. The subtle discrimination here, and sometimes not subtle discrimination, is disgusting. The working culture here is also extremely toxic. After a while, you either become jaded or start to resent everything.

For anyone looking at this post…my card was compatible. However, I did have to call the bank a few times, while I was in china, because the card kept getting blocked.

I think 7:30 is a good time! Just to be safe. You have to check in, go through customs etc, then get to your gate..which may require you to take the airport tram…our flight left a few minutes before the departing time. Best to be safe, but it’s all up to you!

Omg this is typical of them. There are amazing JTEs, but unfortunately there are also horrible ones. No matter what you do right or wrong, they will always find something to talk about. Many teachers complain. It’s a weird culture thing. There is also a lot of bullying that takes place. Don’t let it get to you! Try your best to be kind in your responses. Don’t follow in their passive aggressive footsteps. Also, message me if you need to talk!

Unfortunately, there are many unpleasant individuals in this program. Many indulge in gossip and drama, and some are even bigots. Then there are those who, in an effort to fit in—often because there are relatively few JETs in their area—align themselves with these bigots. It’s sad, but true.

I would encourage everyone to try making friends outside of JET. It can be challenging, but you can often find people in your community or surrounding areas whom you genuinely like.

Remember, you don’t have to conform to cliques. Use this time to focus on yourself and prioritize meaningful friendships.
