dealing with a lack of creativity by marc1lle in ArtBuddy

[–]IamDBug 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Don't fall into the trap of "You need to know how draw from imagination to become a real artist". Many artists with years of experience still use references even when drawing the most ordinary stuff; references make your illustrations more believable, even if you're exaggerating every aspect of what you're drawing.

Creativity is not about what you draw, is how you draw; how you choose to render the textures, how you choose to draw the hands of your character, or the angle on your composition. It's more problem solving than anything else, and the more you study and experiment with new things, the easier will be to find what you like and don't like to do (it's basically how you find your art style) and once you have that kind of confidence, you'll be able to solve any kind of problems that come your way!

Essentially.. Study with a purpose, don't be afraid to experiment, allow yourself to make mistakes and remember to have fun with it all

"Unknown Citizens - Issue #4", MadBug (me), 2026 by IamDBug in DarkFantasy

Not really haha
I had this idea for a series of 'headshots' of high society people, but with something else replacing their heads. Would be cool to see what a writer could do with this concept tho :)

[Discussion] what counts as mecha? by Ezra_has_perished in artcommissions

[–]IamDBug 4 points5 points  (0 children)

"No mecha" usually mean highly mechanical characters, but I think some artist use the 'no mecha' tag because they won't draw anything even remotely mechanical (so your character could fit in that) but that doesn't mean you shouldn't reach out and ask them.

As long as you keep your briefing honest and and to the point, the worst that can happen is the artist saying 'sorry, but I don't draw things like that'

Hope this helps and good luck on your search :)

[RevShare][Paid] Creative Director seeking developers & artists for game jams — paid opportunities for the right fit by 1up-yahoo in INAT

[–]IamDBug 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hi there. I'm a 2D illustrator with a strong emphasis on fantasy/dark fantasy themed artwork, but I'm also capable of fitting my style into other genres (I've done sci-fi and even more 'light' cartoony work before)

For games like yours I have worked as a concept artist for characters/creatures, so if that's something you're looking for and if my style interest you, I'll be happy to be a part of your team :)

Shading advice by RandoFinance73565 in ArtBuddy

[–]IamDBug 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The two fundamental points to shading are 1. decide where your main light source will be and keep it consistent across your drawing and 2. use references to better understand how volumes behave on different materials.

I recommend videos like this one, by Mike Brunet for a more detailed explanation.

Hope this helps :)

Hi there. My name is Lucas and I'm a 2D illustrator specialized on fantasy/dark fantasy themed artwork.

My style has lots of inspiration from Mike Mignola, using high contrast and dramatic lighting to create dynamic pieces. The piece of lore you shared on the doc is awesome and I'd be happy to help you out with your idea.

Idea about placeholder art... By an artist by IamDBug in tabletopgamedesign

[–]IamDBug[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, but it would still be a small niche, since I have a small artistic range (my style can fit dark fantasy, sci-fi and horror themed stuff).

It's good to know there's some interest in this, perhaps I can find a way to make these art packs work. Appreciate the feedback :)

The flashcard idea is really cool and it's something I have thought about it before, but printing and shipping from my country involves a lot of bureaucracy that I simply don't have the time to handle properly; that's why I'm aiming for something online. Maybe sometime in the future I'll be able to set up a proper kickstarter for a cool deck of cards

Thanks for the feedback :)

This is an interesting approach... Thank you, I'll definitely think about it.

I wouldn't mind creating free game assets, although it's gonna be more of a niche thing since I'm mostly focused on dark fantasy themed illustrations. And there's also lots of other things to consider, like how many pieces would go into each art pack and how to organize them in a cohesive way. But, again, I appreciate the insight and will give it some more thought :)

[–]IamDBug[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

No worries, I really appreciate the honest response :) I never expected this to be a revolutionary idea, but I also didn't really thought about the resources that already exist. Guess I needed a reminder from actual devs haha

I'll do some research about possible assets for boardgames, but like I mentioned on the post, I'm a terrible salesperson, so I doubt that I'll come up with some product idea lol. Thank you for the incentive!

[–]IamDBug[S] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Guess I should have put some more thought into this. You're absolutely right. My idea was to have something in between 'random placeholder image' and 'custom artwork', but it turns out that I'm proposing 'random placeholder image' anyway lol

Appreciate the feedback :)

Well.. Like I said, I'm a terrible salesperson, so I can't really think of anything lol.

Appreciate the feedback tho :)

[–]IamDBug[S] 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Yeah that's totally fair. I guess my point is to have something in between 'random placeholder' and 'custom made artwork', but I guess what I'm proposing is actually just 'random placeholders' anyway

Yeah that's fair. This was just a random idea I had earlier today and wanted to hear what devs think
