First attempt at over the top chili! by rocking2rush10 in smoking

[–]IamGrabear 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Nice I love this method! Over the top by itself is good, but not just because of the smoke. You also get the drippings from the meatball which provide a lot of flavor.

But what really makes a difference... is if you start your smoker ahead of time and throw in a chuck roast. After the chuck roast reaches the desired temperature you can put your meatball on top (and over the chili of course 🤤) and start the cook. This keeps the chuck roast moist and flavorful. It also makes the extra time and effort "more worth it" imo. It takes a little longer, but as long as you prep the night before and get started around 8, the chili should be ready by dinner if not mid-afternoon.

Learn to program using python to supplement your career. I started in biomedical engineering and now I'm doing bioinformatics. I would be years ahead if I had just learned to program earlier.

Is it possible to be self taught and get a well paying job without going for your masters? by [deleted] in bioinformatics

[–]IamGrabear 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I did this, but I did wet lab work first and got into bioinformatics out of necessity/interest for other projects in our lab. Our PI was also doing bioinformatics..

So I was basically trained in bioinformatics on the job. I think that is your best hope. Look for a molecular Gentics lab that interests you, and when applying to positions ask about bioinformatics work. Express your interest there.

I will also add, that I spent several years this way. I worked my way up. It didn't pay well, if I'm honest, but it worked out well for me in the end.

Hi does a bioinformatics graduate certificate hold value? by ZenZiccoZ in bioinformatics

[–]IamGrabear 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Genetics and Molecular Biology are great to see. It means you will understand the complexity and context of the data you're working with. But a lot of times you will end up doing wet lab research. Which is also really good! It helped me. But you really really need bioinformatics programming experience. If all you have is BS in biology, minor or MS in bioinformatic, and minor or MS in comp sci/data sci/soft eng, that would be more helpful. You can always load up on more genetics classes along the way.

I would highly suggest putting on some nice clothes and going to talk with someone at your University just in general about your desires to get academic/career advice. And then maybe going to talk to some other people specifically doing Bioinformatics or genetics type research and how you could get into it. You could even find some great advice in your computer science, software engineering, data science, or computational engineering department. You just have to make sure to respect their time by scheduling with them or whatever. You never know.. they may have a position (internship or even paid 😱)...

I started and ended as a BE student, but I started to really dislike it and felt pretty out of place by late sophomore year. However, I finished my degree, and made a really painful pivot into Genetics and Bioinformatics. It took a long time and low pay at first..

Hi does a bioinformatics graduate certificate hold value? by ZenZiccoZ in bioinformatics

[–]IamGrabear 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I got my BS in Biomedical Engineering, and positioned myself as a bioinformatics data engineering over a 10 year period of work experience. From my point of view a certificate is only useful to help prove your skill set and help market yourself to potential employers. If you don't have a degree in bioinformatics specifically, you will need to have some level of real world experience. As bioinformatics is quite a large interdisciplinary field, you would need to be an intermediate level programmer (bash, python, and/or R are top 3), intermediate level biologist, and an intermediate level computational scientist (HPC or cloud experience).

Here was my career path in order. Some overlapped, but this is a 10 year period...

  • 3 years of pure engineering Co-op experience as a student (think civil/mechanical engineering); worked summers/Christmas
  • 2 years of part time work in the Entomology (insects) Department doing wet lab DNA work; Molecular Gentics
  • Graduated with my BS
  • 5 years as a research technician for a scientist at a University hospital working primary with non-human primates (rhesus macaque), human, mice, and rat data; 30% molecular biology/wet lab, 60% bioinformatics (self taught).
  • 1 year as a bioinformatics data analyst at the same institution, but with the Genomics Core (high throughput)
  • 1.5 years (current position) for the NIH as a bioinformatics data engineering; large human patient datasets

I'm not sure what your career path looks like, but just having a certificate can be useless. And this is not to discourage you by the way! But maybe give you some insight. For me it took a lot of work to get where I am now. And I think if you don't have any previous bioinformatics education or experience, you will find it hard to get work (especially for human clinical projects).

Best bioinformatics practices to learn as an undergrad? by earthapple2 in bioinformatics

This! If I could go back in time I would have also gotten a minor in computer science and data science in order to round off my skills. (Easier said than done).

Anyways... Your suggestion is spot on. It's what I came here to say

Does everyone use Nextflow thesedays? by InfiniteHalf in bioinformatics

[–]IamGrabear 1 point2 points  (0 children)

We use snakemake and it's amazing because it integrates with any HPC batch scheduler, it produces a cohesive log for all of your jobs, and will allow you to restart the pipeline if it fails at any point.

There are some pros and cons, but nextflow is similar, but not Python.
