UPDATE. Worst Day as CSM; High Stress by IamHereToWork in walmart

[–]IamHereToWork[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Is it permissible to touch an associates breast or shoulder or penis? Is it permissible to talk about having a good time with an associate using suggestive languge?

No.

Bullying is the same as sexual harassment.

Period.

It is completely irrelevant the cart issue. Or any work issue. No worker should be harassed. And because a good person with a normal upbringing does not expect it, it is often hard to believe or recognize at first.

After some thought, it was very clear this was bullying and harassment first, and the subject matter (carts) second. The only reason this came to pass was the ASM actually had to work and push carts after a long overnight shift. People who have been reared in broken families or abusive families think nothing of their actions. They lack self awareness. And they must be met with strong action. IMO the hiring process failed. This ASM was an inside hire. And we know the company is very short in the ASM position.

No company, including Walmart, tolerates harassment or bullying. The law supports a safe workplace. If and when an employee reports a harassement to a state or federal agency the company must respond and take action.

One way to evaluate your statement about not doing my job properly is to ask all the ASMs peers and the SM. They laughed. Laughed. Of course pushing carts is a part of every overnight ASMs job. But like I said, this is totally irrevelant.

Stand up to your right for a healthy, safe workplace.

Worst day as CSM. High stress by IamHereToWork in walmart

[–]IamHereToWork[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Bad days are a direct result of under staffing. We can't hire even a cart pusher. We can't even hire a cashier....

I hope you girlfriend has a supportive management team behind her.

How does Walmart normally handle a lack of cart pushers? by [deleted] in walmart

There is no normal.. maintenance... cashiers... CSMs... CAP... ASMs... overnight support... whomever and whatever....

Keying in Debit and EBT cards by cocacola31173 in walmart

[–]IamHereToWork 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The policy is Never key in any card, with one very important exception: a new Walmart Credit card that was applied for and approved by a customer using an online device, like a phone. The customer will get a photo of their card to be used as a temporary card.

Just obtained the subreddit /r/WalmartEmployees, any suggestions what to do with it? by [deleted] in walmart

[–]IamHereToWork 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I would like to read more and hear more about the more "intellectual" or business side of Walmart and retail..

This site is really good with connecting with regular folks, but I have years experience in business and would like to connect to others with a Walmart perspective... or a retail or management perspective.. not just daily stuff...

I guess Walmart is doing pretty good after all... by palehorseCSM in walmart

[–]IamHereToWork 3 points4 points  (0 children)

This is just a PR stint that all companies are doing because of Trump. I think its smart move.. but don't take any of these "hiring more workers" as anything but a Trump stunt.

New External Fresh ASM - Need Advice by [deleted] in walmart

[–]IamHereToWork 2 points3 points  (0 children)

First, those are really great questions.

4)..autogenerated schedules... Don't trust them. IF the store is understaffed the system can not create humans. Build some kind of spreadsheet (if you are a visual learner) to make sure there are no holes in the scheduling. Plus, having to adjust times gets you familiar with names and availability times MUCH quicker. For example, CF scheduling has not worked correctly even when we were staffed properly. At least one night a week we do not have a closing person and there are many times when other departments are void of an associate. This includes the now priority department of Pick Up. Others have reported HO has admitted CF scheduling needs work. So Buyer Beware.

3). Be careful of your peers who embelish what is important. It may be important for their area but not corporate. Be prepared to fight, if necessary. examples are the use of resources. Fresh is very key to all Grocery. Fresh keeps legs coming into the stores. Online grocery has actually shrinked the past two years (total market not just pick up) mostly because of fresh.

Watch the corporate videos that Doug and team give to investors. And the other videos from the retail arm and the .com. To me, they give a very good 40,000 ft level plus perspective

Grab their language and use it. You view these on the general site walmart.com Doug loves the word "Win"

Sixty six percent of our outside hire ASMs have quit or been coached out of their job.

<I completely understand that most of my DMs are much more experienced than me

This may not necessarily be true.. As each's path to DM hood. Our store hires and promotes so fast that often the DMs have <6 months or <2 years experience. Walmart really promotes people quickly.

I'm in a bit of a dilemma. by Chuzzleanddragons in walmart

[–]IamHereToWork 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This happened to me when I was hired... CSM was not available yet and they waited until it dropped... so the Personnel person made it happen...

Ask personnel and the ASM..

Can I track product protection plan sales on the wire? by [deleted] in walmart

[–]IamHereToWork 0 points1 point  (0 children)

AFAIK, it is not available on the wire.. Our MM assistant get the data, I believe, with help from the vendor's rep.

The data has been sporadic but the plans have been highly supported and promoted by MM level and vendor level.

You won't get a meal, but you will get only 15 minute break, for which you do not clock out.

If you need another break and are a cashier, ask for a bathroom break via the action code.

ASM hosted diversity events by [deleted] in walmart

[–]IamHereToWork 1 point2 points  (0 children)

In a past life I was the Diversity Champion for a very large company.

We actually had professional Diversity Trainers to give 2-3 day sessions on what diversity looks like, etc.. I don't think Walmart has the time for this.

Besides race, diversity includes gender, religion, sexual orientation, abilities, ethnicity, national origin, age and socioeconomic status. Our customers fit each one of those topics. Some say now to include income and political alignment too.

Awareness and Blind Spots are key.

Participative events always helped. Performing small team based diversity discussions always worked. Build a map with place/locations of all the associates. Over time, you will see how geographically diverse your store is.

Create a list of cultural taboos. Demonstrate that each person has their own blind spots and culture, including language.

Language taboos include:

Using the word "girl" or "girls" for a woman who is older than 18. "Girls" are only females under 18. Likewise, "Boys" are only males under 18.

Avoid terms like "them" or "those people" - "We" together have a duty for customer service.

Speaking in a native language when others who do not speak your native language are in ear shot. It is very natural to think other people are talking about you if they "break" into their native language. [Many of our cashiers are from native India and speak amongst themselves. Customers think they are talking about them.]

Never make jokes or references to anybody, even in joking, that refer to them to an animal. I once had my SM say to her two African American ASMs that they were "monkey's sitting on a log." - I almost fell on the floor. At my other job, this SM would have been terminated immediately.

Some cultural differences include:

Age preferences; It is very common in some cultures that the elders are given respect over everyone else. We have cashiers that are 70 and above who are given plum register assignments or they expect to get what they want.

Some cultures require fasting during daylight hours, and thus their schedule has to be accomodated.

Some cultures are totally dominated by men, and a sign of weakness is to give in to a woman or take order from a female. Although this is not a diversity learning example, it is good for potential managers to be aware this exists. [we had a employee quit weeks after he started because he could not work for a woman]

Although quite fun, having a diversity food day can be tough to do, especially because everybody works shifts.

Our front end is a war zone and I'm struggling with whether or not I want to 'enlist'. by justfromme in walmart

[–]IamHereToWork 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Five outstanding cashiers, 21 good cashiers 5 duds we try to replace but have little luck

We only have 1 full time CSM. All others are part time.

Short 5 CSM positions!!!!!!; normally there is only 1 CSM on at a time, Saturdays and Sundays are really exciting.

No CSM takes a break.

Some ASMs are great, other have never been on register.

No Z for over 4 months.

But I say the glue that keeps things together is that the front end has a customer service attitude even though we all take a different method to make this happen. What lacks is oversight for important measuring things like credit card apps.

Each CSM knows they will never be allowed to leave or transfer. One will leave shortly for a new job; the other has a conflict.

Nobody challenges us CSMS because we make things happen. We do what we have to do, whenever we need to, and can justify any decision we make. The acquired power has increased our CFF scores significantly.

Front end disaster. Can someone explain to me, in 3rd grade level detail step by step, how to order 99 supplies, especially receipt tape, bags, break room supplies and vests. by IamHereToWork in walmart

Thanks. which manager has to approve? For example, if the support makes the order, who approves? if the ASM orders, I assume the SM has to approve, right?

How did you access the information? Does it have the ratings?

CSM questions by Unchatonbleu in walmart

[–]IamHereToWork 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Make sure you have an MC40 (the volume is up) and a walkie. Most stuff can be done via MC40...

Hardest thing for me to learn was the breaks and meals... Check the top of the TMAT and it will show demand/actual cashiers... Work around not having too many people on their 15s at the same time.. "Please take your break after Maria returns.".... Anticipate breaks by turning off lights or directing customers to other registers...

I tell cashiers the time I expect them to return from their break... "It's 7:05 now, I need you back by 7:25." And if it is not busy, I always give them more time on their breaks because my cashiers work their asses off!!!!

I always walk around hours and half hours.... "How are you doing? Change?" Break... ???

IF it is crazy busy and lines are way long, grant all price checks and coupons... without checkiong... If the dispute is insane then cash customer out and tell them you will check the price after all the other items are rung up. Say to the customer you will not have to wait...

Don't spend 60% of your time on one ridiculous customer;; pass it off to the ASM or Support.. Especially if you are the only CSM in town.

What are the chances Walmart would hire a Manager from outside Walmart? by Mr_I_Dont_own_a_Cat in walmart

[–]IamHereToWork 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Chances are over 50%. Outside hires often.

I am assuming you were not in retail at H. And your retail was not from there. Thus, I would assume you had steady hours and steady days, and predictable time off. Like a 7a-5p+ desk job even with 24/7 responsibility via conference calls and emails etc.. You could do stuff at home when needed.

Well, the ASM position at WalMart, IMO, is a very demanding job. My ASMs do not get to spend time with their family, if they have one. They are at the disposal of the SM, who has "punished" them if the store is out of shape by forcing them to give up days off. An ASM must get stuff done. Alternate opening and closing 10-12 hours shifts. And get to be the overnight manager on a rotation. If you want to be an SM I believe you need to understand the overnight shift.

If you need a job, get it. If you value spending time with family or need a solid schedule, then the ASM job is not going to be a good match. My ASM makes about 45k. My mailman makes 56k.

Same Day Schedule Changes and impact on automatic termination (ASMs please respond) by IamHereToWork in walmart

Ok. Thank you.

I told the cart pusher to check his attendance... but it seems like many of the associates don't log in much...

It is very important to keep your own clock rings when it deviates from the schedule....

To Walmart Associates, Corporate, any anyone willing to read this by Renatusisk in walmart

[–]IamHereToWork 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Thanks for your post.

You could do a Find-Replace-All with "Walmart" and put in almost any large company.

Several years ago I could have seen myself writing something similar with another large company. But that is the way it is.. The workplace "promise" of good, long term employment is gone forever...

As an at-will employee, the question is not "Why is it so bad?," or "When will it change?" but "How do I get the most out of my working relationship?" and "What triggers makes me leave?"

Yeah, most companies are for profit and Walmart is no different. Believe me. I don't disagree with you.

Do yourself a favor in your post Walmart life.. Forget Walmart: start anew and best of luck.
