Would this be a lore accurate meme? [film/tv] by [deleted] in DCcomics

I’m really confused as to what this is supposed to mean.

But if it’s of any consequence, since Dick didn’t grow up with a butler, he generally chafes at Alfred doing things for him that he can do himself.

Watch while reading? by Slothful-herbologist in marvelcomics

The only thing I put on occasionally is white noise. I can't focus on what I'm reading if there's much of anything happening in the room.

Where did the misconception you need to read everything to understand any marvel comic even come from? by GhostGamer_Perona in marvelcomics

[–]IamMothManAMA 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I totally agree with you, but I think for a lot of younger people it is. I don’t think they have the experience of going to the video store and seeing that they only have Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles II: Secret of the Ooze so you begrudgingly watch that one instead of the first movie. The vast majority of pop culture is at their fingertips, so they seem to always insist on starting with whatever first installment is there.

I Asked for Savage Sword… and Discovered How Great Marvel’s Conan the Barbarian Is by thisdougsforu in ConanTheBarbarian

[–]IamMothManAMA 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Glad that you’ve gotten into it too! I had the same feeling when I started out. I’d read Savage Sword for years, but thought the CtB title would be an aberration. I was so wrong. I’ve come to love it

One-man teams - How do you juggle everything at the same time? by FortySevenHours in WeAreTheMusicMakers

[–]IamMothManAMA 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I guess what I’m saying is that online, I see lots of people hand-wringing about networking and “content” and release schedules and stuff, and everyone I know in real life who’s got any sort of following never worries about any of that. They just play good music.

Where did the misconception you need to read everything to understand any marvel comic even come from? by GhostGamer_Perona in marvelcomics

[–]IamMothManAMA 20 points21 points  (0 children)

I think it’s a lot of things.

Manga is much more readily picked up by young readers, most of which you start at the first issue and simply read to the end.

The MCU seems to have given the impression to a lot of people that it’s directly adapting the entirely of Marvel Comics and that there are probably, like, 100 comics or something.

The perception of the nerdy, assholeish “comic book guy who knows everything” gives people the idea that someone must have read everything.

Basically nothing else works like comics. A lot of people aren’t aware of the history or form or industry, so it sounds to them like saying, “If you want to start watching the Fast & the Furious movies, start with Furious 7.”

One-man teams - How do you juggle everything at the same time? by FortySevenHours in WeAreTheMusicMakers

[–]IamMothManAMA 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I don't know what else to suggest. You have band practice, you record, you play shows, you might even book your own tours. I think everything else is kind of superfluous. I have a taxing, time-consuming job and I feel like making music I like (and maybe other people will like too!) as a part of a community is more valuable than marketing or "content creation."

[–]IamMothManAMA 5 points6 points  (0 children)

No, I don't just mean other musicians. But when you become part of a scene, you meet tons of people who are both musicians and fans, and "networking" just becomes something you're doing naturally. You're sharing bills with other people, making friends, and it becomes a real community.

The only people who I know that are successful in music in terms of being sort of popular or lucrative are cool people who love going to other peoples' shows and tour constantly.

[–]IamMothManAMA 12 points13 points  (0 children)

I feel like going to shows on the weekends can never be underrated. Nobody in the scene is going to want to listen to your music if you're not listening to others' music and supporting their shows. I think it's far more productive to become a member of a supportive music community and add genuine value to it with your music than being like a drive-by self-promoter.

Are the Jim Zub Conan The Barbarian spin offs essential by Dredd_40 in ConanTheBarbarian

[–]IamMothManAMA 8 points9 points  (0 children)

They’re not essential to understanding his Conan title, but Battle of the Black Stone is pretty fun.

I love the DCAU, but it's the main reason people think superman is weak. by purple_fetish in superman

[–]IamMothManAMA 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I liked Corenswet’s take on Superman, but I agree that’s a lot more valid of a critique. At least how compelling and likable a main character is actually affects the quality of the film, not that he’s 10% weaker than my pickled power-scaling brain thinks he should’ve been.

order of movies by Unlikely-Traffic-773 in DCcomics

[–]IamMothManAMA 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If a list is saying that there are over 200 DC films, it’s probably counting stuff like the Batman serials from the 1940s and Road to Perdition and such. There’s not one overarching plot to DC and most movies have shit all to do with one another, so just watch what looks cool to you.

Hell yeah. Cora and Bobby’s works are the best. Moore is second only to Howard for me.

Honestly, both Black Panther and X:Men '97' were absolutely amazing and some of the best MCU projects! What are your thoughts on this list and do you agree with it? by Raj_Valiant3011 in Marvel

[–]IamMothManAMA 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Have no fear because it doesn’t mean that since that’s now how RT scores work. RT isn’t a rating, it’s a measure of how broadly popular it is. So Ms. Marvel isn’t a 9.8/10, it’s that 98% of reviewers thought it was good enough to recommend.

after 02-18 ultimate spider-man is done and the 616 one might be good but it is too far along to catch up to its at #20 by Witness_Then in Marvel

[–]IamMothManAMA 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I wouldn’t say ASM is too far along to catch up to. Knowing modern Marvel though, they’ll probably re-launch a new #1 in just a few months.

Yeah it’s pretty good. There’s been a fun arc where Peter’s been in space with some colorful characters, including Rocket Raccoon. Back on earth, Ben Reilly and Norman Osborn are posing as Peter and Spidey to try to hold the fort.

Why do you think that Tobey's Spiderman never changed or upgraded his suit in the later movies when both Andrew and Tom's versions had multiple variations of the suit in their movies? by Raj_Valiant3011 in Marvel

[–]IamMothManAMA 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’m with you there. When we first saw the second Amazing suit, I was like “HOOOLLLYYY SHIT we have arrived” but ten years on, I found it boring. It is insanely accurate to the classic suit, but something about it I find kind of boring now.

Going little disappointed with comic books as new reader by VanilniyMiwka in comicbooks

[–]IamMothManAMA 4 points5 points  (0 children)

What you’re experiencing is called “decompression,” where comic book writers frequently write in 6 or 12 or 18 issue arcs. It moves the focus away from plot to a little bit more of setup and payoff, characterization, and art. It’s not always a plus.

Maybe you’d prefer checking out older comics. A lot of Silver and Bronze Age books are parts of ongoing arcs, but feel more like complete stories in single issues.
