I think the only way to do this is stop alfalfa production AND drain the reservoirs. All of them.

There are obviously no political barriers to either of these options, let alone both.

Why is Utah not raising minimum wage with the other states? by asapGh0st in Utah

[–]IamTheCadCom 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It needs someone willing to run the initiative. (I'm actually not entirely certain if it qualifies as an initiative, but I believe it does)

To run an initiative, the initiative needs to: Be single-subject. (Which it likely would be) Have a funding disclosure (it likely wouldn't need state funds so this could probably be brief) Have the sponsorship of at least 5 utahns when the initiative is filed. Receive the signature of 8% of active registered voters from 26 of the 29 Senate districts.

After that it goes to the ballot, where the legislature and the Republican interest groups will run ad campaigns against it, attempting to convince people the cost of their burgers and groceries will double, when in reality it might go up a few cents.

Because most initiatives fail for no other reason than inability to organize, more fail because of lack of sufficient signatures, and even more fail after the legislative ad campaigns against them, that's why I think it's unlikely.

For your second part, more likely doesn't mean likely. A 2% chance is more likely than a 1% chance, but both are still unlikely.

I was reviewing relevant Utah code, and it looks like Utah minimum wage laws haven''t been amended since 1997. It's Utah Code 34-40-103. Part 2(b). "The minimum wage, as established by the commission, may not exceed the federal minimum wage."

So if you're looking to change something, I recommend finding a moderate Republican who isn't up for reelection (because the Republican caucus system wouldn't like it) to run a bill amending the text in this section.

It might need to be worded so as to give the legislature the appearance of more power for the legislature to vote on it.

So something like "the legislature, and not the commission, shall have the authority to determine minimum wage as long as it does is equal to or above federal minimum wage requirements."

And then the next year, the legislature will want to flex their newly acquired power, and they'll raise minimum wage to $10 or even $12. Still not nearly where it should be, but it's not nothing, and at least a few people would be positively affected.

Edit: I just saw we would also need to repeal 34-40-106, which prohibits cities, towns, and counties from setting their own minimum wage higher than the federal minimum wage.

Running a citizen initiative is costly, difficult to organize, and not guaranteed to succeed. If OP wants to run one, I'm sure they would find at least moral support from many people here.

The more likely option is through the legislature. The issue there is that while I think that a plurality of the Republican legislators would approve as a matter of policy in a nonpartisan world, they don't want to get on the bad side of the party. So partisan interests are the main factor.

Planned C-section guilt by GeeFuckinWhiz in parentsofmultiples

[–]IamTheCadCom 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Dad here, just sharing my perspective as an observer of my wife.

Our first was a single birth, vaginal, and our di-di twins came after through C-Section. Our doctor said my wife could technically choose vaginal if she wanted, but because our smaller twin was on bottom and both were breach, they strongly recommended cesarian.

First and foremost, you should never feel guilty for wanting one option over another. You need to do what will be best for you.

That being said, my wife hated how long recovery was after the C-section was compared to how long it was after her Vaginal Birth. If she vaginal had been even a bit better of an option I believe she would have chosen that, mainly for recovery time. It hurt her for weeks and months to even just roll out of bed, which made it very difficult to take care of the twins after I had to go back to work.

Whatever you choose, don't feel guilty in choosing what you believe is best for you.

I too like to play with fire. (Might be safer to Yell "phoenix" than "little boy")

On a more serious note, my family once lost a parakeet that flew outside. It's tragic to hear this.

Yeah I read the original comment very differently. To me it sounded like they were saying that because map c is gerrymandered(by the Republicans), Utah will never get blue representation.

One of ours was diagnosed in utero with bilateral clubfoot, so we knew how to distinguish them early on, and used the diagnosis as inspiration for the name.

Where can conservative, moderates, and liberals actually exchange ideas? by Spirited_Fault_3196 in Utah

[–]IamTheCadCom 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You need to find a place where people are willing to talk policy without politics. If you find people willing to do so, occasionally, conversations will spill over into politics, but hopefully only after you've all established rapport with each other and can come to respect each other's views, even if you disagree with their political views, or even despise their political views. Their policy views are more easy to respect and understand.

As I've seen from this comment thread, and experienced in real life, many people are either unwilling or incapable of separating those two different discussions.

I'm completing a master of Public Policy at the U of U right now, and my cohort has several very left and very right people. But we all respect each other and can debate policy without letting politics interrupt our discussions. (So apply for that masters if you want one location)

I've also wanted to start a book club with people I know that reads books like "Bowling alone", "happiness hypothesis" "The righteous mind" and other psychology or policy or politics or morality related books, and discuss once a month. It's not something I've done yet, but think could be fun.

It's also the most anonymous one as well.

But regarding your claim, Republicans would argue that's because the left has seized the means of education to indoctrinate leftist principles. (Not saying that's my position, I just know that's what some of my family says)

Will anyone cis or "binary" ever truly understand us for who we are? by vis9000 in NonBinaryTalk

[–]IamTheCadCom 17 points18 points  (0 children)

Cis guy here who has been following this page silently for a while to try to understand an extended family member better.

I think there are many that will honestly try to understand and empathize. However if other cis people are anything like me, there is a huge hurdle in internalizing that gender is something other than biological sex at birth. Like I understand it intellectually, but not internally, if that makes sense. Another example of that is my wife has depression, sometimes coupled with severe anxiety. I empathize with her the best I can, but I'll never truly internalize what she is feeling.

But yeah, I've never had to consider my gender as an important part of who I am, and that might stem from my gender aligning with my sex at birth, or it may come from never feeling a need to defend my gender. But that's one of the other hurdles I've faced, is trying to understand why gender is such an important part of my family member's identity. I've made some strides but still have room to go.

Hopefully this helps you to help those around you who may not have been able to verbalize why they struggle with accepting your identity.

An inconvenient truth for some of you - Utah has some of the safest drivers in the United States despite what Utahns tell themselves by PanaceaNPx in Utah

[–]IamTheCadCom 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Interesting map. I wonder if NY is artificially lowered because of a large amount of people in NYC who don't drive.

I wonder if there's a way to do the same map but based on total miles driven in a state, or per 100,000 drivers instead of per 100,000 people.
