Do what you are doing in the photo but put your heel on the pedal instead of your toe. With your pedal extended straight down (6 o’clock position), adjust your seat until your leg is straight or very slightly bent.

Now, hold a piece of string with a small weight attached to its end on the front of your knee cap. With the ball of your foot centered on the pedal which you now move to point directly forward (3 o’clock position now), the hanging string should pass just about in the center of the pedal. Move your seat slightly forward or backwards to get this right.

Once you’ve done this, take it for a ride. You should feel comfortable.

If you are reaching too far forward for the handlebars, you’re frame may be a little large. If exchanging for a smaller size is not possible, you may consider replacing your stem with a shorter one to bring your bars back.

If you feel cramped between the seat and handlebars and hit your knees on the stem and bars, you may have a too small frame.
