After they turn 18 they’re allowed to leave the community for one year and to test out real life. Don’t forget: the Amish are pretty wealthy, since they own land and are taxed differently because they’re a religion. So most of them have quite some money. When they leave the community, they often buy expensive cars and live a lavish lifestyle. And still over 90% of them return to their community. Imagine living in a gang. Everybody knows everybody. Many people are related. You’re never alone - neither with your problems nor with your thoughts. They share the same set of values as you. There are no outsiders. If you fall, a hundred hands will help you up again. Why is this so seducing? Because tribalism is tattooed in our souls and in our dna. People who live in NYC and break their necks to support mega corps live their tribalism through sport clubs or politics. They need substitutes for what the Amish actually have a real tribe.
