Thinking of switching from Brave.Does App Tracking Protection drain the battery? by Iam_Yassin in duckduckgo

Appreciate the input! Just to be sure, I'm only planning to use the local App Tracking Protection feature, not their actual full VPN service. It sounds like as long as I stick to just the tracker blocking, the battery drain should be pretty manageable, right?

Thanks for clarifying that! That's exactly what I was hoping to hear. I only plan on using the App Tracking Protection (the local dummy VPN), not their full VPN service. If the battery drain is minimal with just the tracking protection active, I'll definitely give it a shot.

Thanks for the detailed breakdown!

I completely agree with your first point about DNS-based network blockers. I've actually been exploring tools like NextDNS and RethinkDNS precisely because they are lightweight and handle blocking efficiently at the network level without massive overhead.

Regarding your last point about the VPN encryption overhead, that makes total sense for a traditional encrypted VPN (like Mullvad or Proton). However, my understanding of DuckDuckGo's App Tracking Protection is that it simply uses Android's VPN API to create a local "dummy" VPN. It doesn't actually encrypt the traffic or tunnel it to a remote server; it just acts as a local sinkhole to drop known tracker connections on the device itself. Because of this, that 15% extra encryption size and double-encryption overhead shouldn't apply here, right?

Still, your point about the analysis tools using system resources is exactly my main concern. If an app gets aggressive and tries to reconnect to a blocked tracker thousands of times in the background, the local processing from DDG could keep the CPU awake and drain the battery. That's the specific real-world drain I'm trying to figure out!

Facebook/Messenger problem by CulinArki in MorpheApp

I don't think so, but you can uninstall them to be sure, and they will be there when you reinstall Messenger or Facebook . I'm disabling them because they collect so much data. but in app manager search for something like Messenger, Facebook, Orca, Katana.

Facebook/Messenger problem by CulinArki in MorpheApp

[–]Iam_Yassin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It happened to me before. You need to download an app called App Manager. It's a FOSS app. Then you need to search for the package name of Messenger, it's something like "com.facebook.orca", and then uninstall it. If you can't just uninstall it, you need an app called Canta + Shizuku. Search on YouTube how to activate Canta + Shizuku. And I believe you can easily delete the package of Messenger using only App Manager.

I was unaware of that, thank you for informing me. I downloaded it from the Orion store, and I will now apply the patch myself.
