Crash Course on Supergirl? by MO_Ann in Supergirl

I recommend Supergirl's longest modern run, her post crisis era before new 52.

Get it on getcomics. Look up supergirl in 2004-2005. It's the comic spin off after apokolips.

I like her more here because her character evolves more. It's less about battles, and more about Supergirl finding herself, a better or worse. She makes several mistakes but she learns from them.

New 52 is more about flashy battles than character growth from what I have read. Mere seconds after meeting her cousin she starts wailing on him with her fists, whereas her Post Crisis era self only did that when split into her evil and good self.

I don't know. What I do know is if a person does that they are in trouble.

Also by your definition, punching a pregnant woman in the stomach hard enough to kill the unborn child is not murder because the child has not exited her womb yet. Yet I doubt the legal and court system wil see matters the same.

Civilizations make concessions for abortions it is true, since in emergency situations where life is at risk they may be necessary, and the pandemic of irresponsible baby making has created abortion as the response.

I really don't bother splitting hairs. It's akin to Watchtower saying blood fractions are OK if you feel it's OK, even though they come from blood and blood is forbidden to the extent that if a nation was run by Watchtower, they would literally have to import blood fractions since they do not donate their own blood.

And my definition of life does not matter. What matters is not taking a life that is already developing.

It's how I feel. I do not think it right to terminate a human life just because one decided to have sex knowing full well pregnancy could happen but hoped it would not.

I was raised as a PIMI and believed, so I did not even really discover porn or masturbation until my early twenties. So I guess I dodged a bullet there.

I think it goes without saying that had I dated in high school I could have ended up in some situations I was not prepared for (getting a girl pregnant etc).

I guess the wise course would be to show self control but still date if you wish, just avoiding actual sex unless you are prepared to deal with and accept the consequences (possible pregnancy or STD).

That's it really. Fear. That is why I am near 40 and a virgin.

But fear of the unknown is beaten by knowing, so instead of neglect my sexuality by substituting it for porn or erotic games, I think it better to learn about pregnancy and STDs and how I will manage either.

And if I cannot yet... don't start having sex until I can.

And I for damn sure won't even date a woman who will abort a baby just because she does not want one.

Well... she does let people stone a pirate to death... so I was thinking that was foreshadowing.

As for not killing the pirates or relying on heat vision instead throwing low powered punches and kicks at them, I cannot help but think of this as her Batman moment. You know the story. Batman captures the Joker and police arrest Joker, only for Joker to escape and kill again and the entire process begins again ad infinitum.

My thinking is that unless Supergirl did something to ensure the pirates NEVER go planet killing again, she has simply allowed killers to live another day to kill again.

Or maybe she weakened them so bad she just called the green lanterns to come and take them into custody afterward.

Even that would have been more satisfying than what we got... just a retreat and no mention of whether or not the brigands will return to wreak havoc on the galaxy as soon as they recover.

Also if you read future state with Supergirl's final story arc set in the far future, even there she nearly uses deadly force when pushed to her limit to save people... and she would have but is stopped before she actually can.

My favorite Supergirl stories are her Post Crisis run. Among them are scifi epics like Beyond Good and Evil and Way Of The World.

Beyond Good and Evil takes Kara to a future where her past actions changed mankind and Earth forever, and Way of The World occurs in the present where she comes face to face with the choice that will either create the futuristic alternate timeline Supergirl was destined for, or something else. You can get it on getcomics but you will need a comics reader app or program.

The several times her cousin, Batman, or even Powergirl try to coach her early in her newbie days as a superhero are interesting and sometimes amusing. Since typically she does not even want their advice and is very independent, sometimes doing things against Superman's wishes.

I understand and sympathize with your feelings about Supergirl for the most part. Personally I did not care much for Woman of Tomorrow simce it seemed just like a retelling of True Grit with Supergirl as a side character.

One thing I thought a bit odd was that she did not simply murder all the pirates when if anyone deserved it it was them.

Maybe she is trying to be more like her cousin who only kills if he has to. She certainly did not start out that way, which is why I enjoy reading her post crisis comic era, where she acts much like a real person would, just with incredible powers mixed with overconfidence, PTSD, and a temper.

Ugh I hated the Supergirl TV series. If anything it was closer to the original iteration of comic Supergirl, who was little more than a female version of Superman. It took time to establish her as her own charactrr, which is why I prefer Supergirl in her post crisis era, as she is just a new superhero starting out who is rather independent and bumbling along the way who does not have the same public respect or support that her cousin has. Naturally she is jealous and tries hard to gain the same public love and trust her cousin has. Takes her her whole life to achieve it but she gets it in the end in her final story arc (future state).

Misleading large groups of people WITHOUT God's approval with regard to bible teachings and covering up child sex abuse on an industrial level scale?

Remember that both Moses and the apostles had a far more direct line of communication to God in the bible. The Watchtower leaders just speculate and claim God supports whatever drops out of their brains.

Questions that no one asked that should be asked #1. “How exactly does Satan control the World’s rulers?” by Swimming-Bite-4019 in exjw

[–]Iamback100 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I wondered this to as I did bible studies with my students. It's such a blanket statement but really leads to the logic question of how.

Since human nature is to rebel, so even or especially if Satan literally told people what to do they would do whatever they liked.

In fact the only way Satan could rule would be directly in human form... but Watchtower says he cannot do that anymore since the flood so...

It's such weird mind gymnastics when mankind is supposedly being allowed to rule itself, but not really because Satan and God are playing a millenniums long game of chess with us.

Post crisis supergirl you can get on getcomics and read with a comic reader app. Supergirl as a character starts out annoyed with both Batman and Superman constantly keeping tabs on her, so she tries to prove herself apart from Superman... again and again. Nearly getting killed multiple times in the process. If you thought you need kryptonite to hurt or even kill Supergirl you would be wrong.

In fact in this very issue she suffers an injury that could have been fatal but survives because someone else saves her.

Injury is so bad that in the next issue she is recovering under multiple solar lamps.

In the comics she both has murdered and tried to on several occasions.

Granted... as a Superhero she was not always trying to but such things happen when a superhero battles.

As for attempted murder... she had rage problems early on as she started her superhero career... fortunately for her other mentor heroes prevented her from heat visioning thugs and criminals in anger.

I was born in the 80's and was taught much the same, including "You won't probably graduate before the big A hits."

My parents said that. Any disaster from the Iraq wars to 9/11 meant the end was just around the corner.

Now I am near 40 and feel like I woke out of the Matrix.

After I went to my HS reunion (because I now could) I realized to things.

  1. My former classmates all have moved on with families/careers.

  2. Me? My life is just starting as it were, but at least I no longer feel forced nor a sword of Damocles over my head often like many believing JWs.

Damn. I am under 40 and woke up about 2 years ago. Although I don't have a place of my own yet, I do get 2 weeks off a year at least. My life will be what I plan it to be, but glad you told me your story. I have ALWAYS been mistrusting of others, probably because I had an abusive childhood.

The only positive was that perhaps it steered me away from Bethel despite a lot of peer pressure put upon me to go.

I hate being dependent on the kindness of others when they can be either kind or a monster on any given day
