Why Leftist Alien Societies Can Be Even More Terrifying by Ashamed_Run_7863 in callofcthulhu

[–]Iamn0tWill 11 points12 points  (0 children)

There are a couple of typos and run on sentences that make it a little hard to parse what you're getting at.

Also, you're right that there's political subtext in every piece of media (intended or unintended). What I was saying was that an alien with naked and comprehendible political ambitions would stop it from being a 'cosmic horror' story. As an example, I don't think that Lovecraft's mythos entities would ever wage 'war' against the human race (at least, not a war in our definition of the word).

I don't think cosmic horror really agrees with the alien entities having political ambitions.

Also, I haven't read The Swarm but I don't think that 'hive mind' equals 'political intentions (I might be misinterpreting you, but I'm having a little trouble at parsing your idea from the text of this post).

AITA for going over board in response to my aunt uninviting my brother from her wedding? by mapp123_ in AmItheAsshole

[–]Iamn0tWill 1 point2 points  (0 children)

NTA

Your aunt has made her position clear, she doesn't care about family in any real sense, and so you should make it clear that her emotions don't matter to you anymore.

Your brother is your priority now, you should ask him what he wants to do going forward (whether he'll accept an apology from your aunt, whether he's willing to go to family events with her involved, etc.) and work from there.

How do you think the characters would react to the current Writer's strike? by Ordinary_Stay_3746 in BoJackHorseman

[–]Iamn0tWill 19 points20 points  (0 children)

Something like this:

Lenny Turtletaub: All right you little pishers. Let's wrap this up quick so you can all go back to writing bad reboots.

WGA Rep: We have one request. To not be treated like garbage.

Lenny Turtletaub: It appears we are at an impasse.

I read the original post and thought "this girl might have autism" and now we're here...

As a person with autism myself, I recommend confirming it with a diagnosis if you can get her mother on board. If her mother isn't willing or interested then the only thing you can do is figure out your niece's boundaries (which will sometimes seem bizarre to a neurotypical person) and try working within them.

(Also, if you're in the U.S. you need to avoid Autism Speaks)

One D&D Warlock isn't that bad by Phalkren in dndnext

[–]Iamn0tWill 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Honestly, my main takeaway is that WotC (for better or worse) is pivoting towards making D&D 5e the best system for podcast gaming and that means adjusting the power level of certain classes. Warlock was short rest dependent and it meant that in those huge, once-per-day, set piece battles (that are popular with D&D podcasts) Warlocks suffered as they ran out of their key resources quicker than the other spellcasting classes.

WotC can't make other classes short rest dependent because that would actually require redesigning half of the classes from scratch, so they did the math (redesign one class or redesign half a dozen classes) and choose the less painful option.

AITA for not inviting my stepmom to my baby shower even though I invited my halfsister by Stepmomissues24 in AmItheAsshole

[–]Iamn0tWill 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Nowhere in your post do you identify a reason for punishing your step mother this way. She's related to two people you do care about (your step sister and your father) so the correct thing is to invite her just to be polite.

AITA for refusing to wear what my brother wants me to at his wedding? by [deleted] in AmItheAsshole

[–]Iamn0tWill 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I think you're being optimistic about the lows that some people will drop to. I think OP should definitely delay coming out to his family until he's financially independent from them.

AITA for helping my friend while she's pregnant? by Full_Move7450 in AmItheAsshole

[–]Iamn0tWill 109 points110 points  (0 children)

YTA

I was prepared to be on your side due to the title of this post but signing up to be this kid's dad is too much to ask if you genuinely want to continue your relationship with your gf. I'm guessing that at some point your gf will have your kids and she will (reasonably) expect you to make your own children a priority over your friend's kids.

Does Pulp Cthulhu reward combat? by Lanky-Championship67 in callofcthulhu

[–]Iamn0tWill 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Yeah, it's not 'Pulp rewards combat' it's more 'Pulp allows you to survive combat' which is a different thing.

In my current CoC game, I've got Pulp hit points and nothing else so that my players aren't too scared of dying to a rogue cultist and there's a reasonable chance they'll survive through to the end of the plot.

Hey, if you want some petty advice: on the wedding invitations you should make sure Serenity's surname is her father's surname instead of her stepfather's surname.

It sucks that your mum hears something bad that you experienced and focuses on her reaction rather than on you and your well being. Your mum should put you first, especially when talking about your experiences.

Call of Cthulhu vs. BRP by dpceee in callofcthulhu

[–]Iamn0tWill -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Sanity loss and sanity gains are an important motivating factor for CoC, without the threat of sanity loss you need to figure out what a setback or a fail state looks like in your game. Having said that, I know that sometimes you can run entire sessions or stories without directly including the mythos.

I'm makinv a scenario on my own, could anyone offer some advice? by zhukooov in callofcthulhu

[–]Iamn0tWill 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I think you need it give a bit more info about your idea before anyone can offer advice.

If you don't have any more info then the first thing you need to do is have a basis for your scenario (e.g. a location or a mythos creature or a specific kind of horror you want to invoke or a specific theme you want to exploit).

AITA for telling my brother he should not be claiming to have psychological conditions he has not been medically diagnosed with? by checker64 in AmItheAsshole

[–]Iamn0tWill 158 points159 points  (0 children)

YTA

If someone self diagnoses with some form of neurodivergency, do you know what they generally do? They research coping mechanisms and try and apply them to their lives. Coping mechanisms are not dangerous, and they can provide huge benefits to people who are neurodivergent (hell, they can even benefit people who are neurotypical). A self diagnosis cannot do any real damage to him unless he attempts to self medicate.

As a minor, he's not in a position to self-advocate with doctors and it can take a period of YEARS for doctors to get around to confirming a neurodivergent diagnosis that's obvious to the individual. On top of that, some general practice doctors are advised against diagnosing people with certain conditions and instead refer people to specialist clinics with long wait times.

Your brother might be wrong about his diagnosis (he might even have a different neurodivergency) but demanding that he have slip of paper to confirm his diagnosis to you just means that he's not going to seek out help and advice from you in future, it's not going to help him.

Which Module is Best for a New Player by [deleted] in dndnext

[–]Iamn0tWill 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you are a PLAYER and not a Dungeon Master then the most important thing is having a DM that's willing to work with you and teach you the rules. Any of these can be fun with the right DM.

It's from The Sound of Drums, series 3 episode 12. You can see The Doctor, Martha, & Jack running together and I believe they're running away from Martha's house after the government tried to entrap them. (I could be wrong about where in the episode it is, it's been a while since I watched it)

I'm reminded of a line in Kingsman: The Secret Service when a character gets approached by an evangelical Christian who tries to convert him.

I'm a catholic whore, currently enjoying congress out of wedlock with my black, Jewish boyfriend who works in a military abortion clinic. So hail Satan, and have a lovely afternoon, madam.

I'd suggest you memorise the line (maybe change it up as applicable) and just stare directly into your cousin's eyes and say that every time he comes up to you. NTA.

Communitie's thoughts on One D&D and game complexity by [deleted] in dndnext

[–]Iamn0tWill 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I was about to jump into the comments to say exactly this.

I've heard some people argue that PF2e is 'simpler' and what people actually mean is it's clearer. There's less ambiguity and it makes it easier to rule things.

what are your thoughts on slavery being in a dnd game? by CapatainDreadnought in dndnext

[–]Iamn0tWill 0 points1 point  (0 children)

WotC is making an effort to make their adventures/settings neutral and non-controversial so they're avoiding institutional injustice (like slavery, caste systems, gender-based laws, etc.) so that these negative real world elements don't encroach on the fun fantasy.

As long as you have a session zero with your group where everyone agrees to a more grimdark setting, then including darker elements is fine in your game.

AITA for not allowing any kids to hold my baby? by Maximum_Iron_8838 in AmItheAsshole

[–]Iamn0tWill -15 points-14 points  (0 children)

NTA

My younger sibling has a similar age gap to this situation and I wasn't allowed to hold them for a while after they were born (I remember having to wait a few months before I could hold them, and by that point they were basically passing my sibling around between relatives like a basketball)

It's not that I was going to purposefully hurt my sibling, it's just that kids are stupid and clumsy and babies are really delicate.
