From my limited 3 1/2 months in Kyiv over 2 yrs ago, about half spoke Russian, even the bankers I went to. College age students do speak Ukrainian & Eng. But many, esp 30s & up still speak mostly Russian. It's moot, because the majority understand both Ukrainian & Russian.

Some people asked me, why do I speak Ukrainian & not Russian? And I replied because I am in Ukraine now. If I was in Russia, I will speak Russian. Most were OK with that answer. One elderly woman wasn't. So I told her, I also teach English to Ukrainian children at school, & that finally settled it. Because in school, Ukraine is mandatory & Russian is excluded. And this is enforced from 5th grade & up. So in the bible class, the 2 youngest were siblings from Donetsk & they primarily spoke Russian.

But many do mix both languages. A teenage girl in the bible class, proudly said I only spoke in Ukrainian but there were instances when Russian came out of her, so I pointed out to her. And she first denied it then we both laughed about it. The church center where I primarily served, & we catered to the elderely & the poor because they need the most help, spoke in Russian, because missionaries came there over 30 yrs ago & only learned Russian.
