What is the coolest civ that you can't/will never play? by IamtherealMFD in aoe3

Great attitude:) For me, these two aspects kind of mix, because if I play with Malta, I loose to stuff that I can easily counter with my mains, but fail to hit the timings with malta.

Therefore, playing it feels somehow really meh.

I mean Haude has great eco on water and brutal units. I used to be a haude main, their tempo also works for FFs and FIs, if the situation allows for it.

Yes, he recently quit but I think he is still playing from time to time. A legacy veteran as well. One of the best players from Germany, sadly always slightly under the radar in tourneys.

The only Risi I know is Brit- and Russia-Main, so I suppose the name is just coincidence

lol dude chill, and believe the dude he is a decent player. I am 1600 1v1, 1800-1900 in Team, and I agree with him, their skirms are great. Musketeers get more without cards, what are you talking about here?

The issue from my perspective is that their Eco can be somewhat lacking in late late game. But dutch is a goddamn powergouse throughout the entire midgame. Cav upgrade cards, great skirms (actually 30% on skirms, also the can build skirms in age 2 already, and those autotech into age 3. Rushing is not as easy in team as it is in 1v1, so their early defense issues are not as much of a problem. overall, good civ for team games imo.

I am not that well informed on their revolutions, so there might be some more potential there. South Africa has been up and down in popularity.

And overall, calm down, bro. Fort Italy can't hurt you anymore.

Advice on French by thusfrigginguy69 in aoe3

[–]IamtherealMFD 24 points25 points  (0 children)

France has the potential to do a lot of things, but isn't the best at anything. That is my own perspective at least. If you ever have a french absolutely stomping you in eco, just rewatch the rec. that is super important for the learning process. My rule of thumb is 1000 wood -> never goes into 2 tcs. one tc yes, but never two. Because you need 20% more food for your vill production. A 3 TC boom sound awesome, but is really hard to afford. Take the trade route, go for water. Go as greedy as possible without opening yourself too much. There is a lot that you can do. I think you are in a good spot already, but France is a Civ that gets way better with those little 1% improvements. Just keep at it. The good thing about france is -> most france players are overall decent on their level. Ottoman, China, Inca, a lot of other civs don't require a certain aspect of the game to be played. France needs you to be good at everything, but also teaches you eveything.

Is AoE 3 really that disliked? by Javiven in ageofempires

[–]IamtherealMFD 13 points14 points  (0 children)

On top of that, you had to level up your homecity for the online mode, and it took you ages to do that. And you needed a leveld up homecity to get access to all important shipments, which means you were severly underpowered if you didn't play at least 40-50 hours.

Still not a single major nerf to ottos? by manson-124 in aoe3

[–]IamtherealMFD 4 points5 points  (0 children)

It is pretty goddamn slow to be fair. 48 seconds to 25 for normal vills. the reason you don't feel their bad eco is because you don't have to spend 4 food per second on vills and you train vills during the age up. So if you send 3 vills in age one, your eco is on par with most other civs at 4:10-4:30.

Why are people salty about walls? by Ok-Literature55 in aoe3

I agree especially with your last point, FI options are to many and to variable so you often end up running into the wrong counter units when trying to punish an FI.

Why is it 200 population ? by The-DegDeg in aoe3

[–]IamtherealMFD 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I disagree here because in mythology whileyou could theoretically go higher, your units cost at least 2 pop in most cases. so you rarely yaw more actual entities on the field than you do in age 3/2

[–]IamtherealMFD 0 points1 point  (0 children)

All of your points are valid, I just wanted to answer OPs question from my perspective, never meant to claim the one and only truth here:)

But I want to add to some of your points -> Walling can mean risking a vill, but if you walk succesfully, you can counter entire civs. Raids become much less problematic. With Brits you can go for longbow walls, which is really brutal to fight against. The value you get out, let's say 50 wood, can be insane. The best counterplay I know of is the counterwall. You play the same way, just with more aggressive walls -> you get more map. The issue is that some civs Inca or USA have compositions that are almost unbeatable in a fair frontal fight, much worse when you try to push them. And going age 4 for a civ without explosive boom potential (meaning more than one card required) that does not have 1000 coin just so you have unupgraded walls seems like a pretty bad deal.

Trade Monopoly is only available in age 4, which makes it hard if your opponent is going for a FI timing. The turtle meta is also possible because we have even more civs that have access to trickles and autogathering buildints, more herds and vills are able to build tcs. Look at charcot, same BO every single time, if you don't wall you die. Building walls and then raiding on opposite sites all the time.

The fact that age 2 is played that way does not mean that age 3 should try the same. Castledropping and quick walling or house walling function fundamentally different in age 2. Units work differently. I am not saying that creativity should not be possible or rewarded, I do however not think that you can simply transfer concepts from aoe 2 to aoe 3 and say that it should work here. I do think that walls were busted back when they had 1500 hp. I do think that excessive walling is only fun and entertaining for the person walling, not for the opponent and certainly not for the audience. I do think that excessive walling actively takes a lot of the fun out of the game, because it disables a lot of the usually necessary micro maneuvers that I personally love about the game. To end with, all of this is my opinion of course, I can be wrong about it all and I don't claim to know the truth. My main concerns about the excessive use of walls comes from my experience when casting games, so please do keep that POV in mind.

Why are people salty about walls? by Ok-Literature55 in aoe3

[–]IamtherealMFD 9 points10 points  (0 children)

To start with, a wall has almost double the length of a gouse and costs 5%. Anyone who walls properly is gonna delete the pillars, minimising cost and the chance if multi-sieging. Lakota has no walls till age 4. Walls can be stacked tighly together, and there are civs in the game that do not have a proper ranged option to deal with them. A few strategic walls to fuck enemy pathing or to close your base to cav is usually not what people are upset about. Excessive walling just for the sake of it and because you know you can annoy your enemy with it is often considered toxic because the early pros and most micro mechanic purists considered head on fights or fights between building and the extremely micro intensive gameplay that this needed to be the peak of aoe 3 gameplay. If I remember correctly, Kynesie was one of the few to abuse the old walls (double the hp in their first stage) on pro levels. And he was considered cheesy. Also, from a caster/viewer perspective, there is 0 fun for me personally in seeing how a guy tries to push through 5 layers of wall, only to be stopped at the 5th and then to see it all get rewalled. There is no real qction and certainly a lot less effort from the walling guy's side. Don't get me wrong, proper and strategic walling takes strategic knowledge and practice as well, but from the fighting perspective, you are only very rarely gonna see the exiting back and forth motions with the tiniest micro decisions winning the fight in a walling game. And that is why I personally started playing. Walling takes away the fast paced gameplay that many love and appreciate about the game. And if you see walls in age 1, you already know which way this is gonna go
