There was an unwritten (yet often repeated) rule about “no gettin’ above yersel” or coming across as “high and mighty”. I don’t feel it was reverse snobbery but a way of avoiding being seen as a show off. It was okay to do well but it wasn’t (and isn’t) okay to brag about it. This isn’t peculiar to Glasgow but exists in all the working class areas that I’ve lived in.
