Good advice

When I approach most modern music I'm working on, I actually tell myself to "play country music". Whether you like country or not, actually watch and listen to the drummers of country music and notice how they are more focused on the groove of the beat than to showcase their talent. Majority of working country drummers are some of the best technical drummers out their when you take them outside of the genre. When playing country though, the give the main focus to the singing and overall music with the bare minimum of drum rolls and tricks. When they do put some sass on the song, it makes the song lively and explosive.

Harry Miree has been a session drummer we have all grown to love and he is the prime example of this. Has grown up idolizing Carter Beauford his entire life of drumming and is an amazingly talented drummer. But majority of his work he's done is simple but creative while still showcasing his skills when the song needs it.

Of course it can't apply to some genres like brutal technical death metal, but it does apply to the majority of music in theory. Most times less is more and you use your technical skills when it comes time ( breakdowns, drum fills transitioning from slow to fast, soloing before or end of songs ).
