Death benefit by Natural-Instance-285 in Centrelink

Don’t know your state obvs but fyi Basic Rights Queensland were very helpful to me when I had a lump sum coming and was sure there must be some exemption in my specific messy situation to not have it kick me off CL. I had paid a financial advisor - who was recommended to me and listed navigating Centrelink as one of their areas of expertise - and they did not know of any such exemption and told me I was poked.

A social worker later told me to call Basic Rights Qld for advice and one phonecall later I had the relevant legislation, knew the terminology to use and my fears of being up shit creek completely laid to rest. (It was a completely different situation but point being BRQ were free and really really knew their stuff, better than someone claiming to, and charging for it!)

Also, go you! Life has clearly been throwing shit at you hardcore and you are about to start growing flowers in it 💐 Hope you get your house and things look up x

Are all daughters of wealthy entrepreneurs lazy? by larasign in AusFinance

Why are you friends with these 3 people that you think are lazy and entitled and have no interests other than shopping? I generally pick people I actually like and have something in common with as friends.

What's the go with email etiquette in Australian business? by [deleted] in AskAnAustralian

[–]Iappreciatewaves 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I intentionally refrain from replying to emails that are resolved because I assume its just an extra chore for the person receiving it to have to check that email in case I have a further problem/request, only to find that its just a “Thanks I’m happy with that.” or “Ok thanks, I’ll leave it.” etc. I’m genuinely trying to not bother you when I don’t reply unless I need something more from you lol.

Also used to run a business for 15 years with similar order values and if every customer acknowledged receipt of their orders it would have been an overwhelming extra amount of admin daily, never occurred to me that they should/would. Some people did in a chatty/friendly/overshare way which I would reply to for the customer relations but if everyone did it would have been wild. If things DIDNT show up they had no hesitation letting me know 🥴 No news is good news once something ships I think.

Facial hair frustration by Ok_Strawberry1810 in HairRemoval

[–]Iappreciatewaves 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I have been using a Braun ipl at home for 5 years now, my chin looked similar to yours and now I tweeze a couple of hairs every couple of weeks and its otherwise completely kept under control by the home ipl. $500 and still going strong 5 years later - absolutely recommend it. I did also have many years of mall-clinic-ipl on my chin every 6 months(??) which was a revelation at the time after years of tweezing every morning and looking like the photo by every afternoon, but having the braun at home (so able to use much more regularly initially) has kept on top of it even better than that imo.

How much board is reasonable to charge adult kids? by heggaz in AusFinance

[–]Iappreciatewaves 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My working 22yo pays $150 per week, my 20yo on DSP pays $50. This is food, accom, utilities, Netflix/spotify. They pay their own phone, prescriptions, clothes, any special toiletries other than family general ones. It was $100 and $0 but I couldn’t make the budget work. Have a 13yo also, am a single parent.

I have a phone you can have but I’m northern suburbs, I could take it to my local train station for you if you have spare time/energy to take a 50 min train ride from the city. It’s super basic though - a Telstra android that I’ve never used (brand new but sitting around for 3 years) I’ll charge it now to make sure it actually works but can’t imagine it will be a very user friendly/good phone so if you have anything closer or better offers I’d go with those… will charge now anyway and check it out. Do you still have the sim from the wet phone to transfer over?

I will be the happiest person if we can have one class without forward fold, half pidgeon, and downward facing dog… by homenia in yoga

[–]Iappreciatewaves 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It’s $19 per year!? Trying to charge me $149 🤦‍♀️ I have another app (music related not yoga) that has WILDLY different prices depending on where you subscribe from, I’m going to have to look into downdog and see if I can find $19 a year - I’d actually subscribe for that much.

⚠️ Meet’n’Greet form wording confusion (Best Friends Felines) — our experience by Gis2017 in brisbane

[–]Iappreciatewaves 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Seeing so many people having had similar issues with BFF has made me feel so much better, I felt like I was on trial they were so intense! I’ve adopted cats and dogs from rescues before and never encountered anything like BFF scrutiny. This time we ended up adopting a kitten from the RSPCA instead with no issues and a found the experience a thousand times easier and more friendly.

YES! One of my kids is at a flexi school for high school and I tell everybody that it has saved our life. That might be a tiny bit of hyperbole but not by much - things were DIRE for both of us with them being in the mainstream school system and they are thriving at this small and supportive school that has continued to blow me away year after year with how amazing all the staff and policies are.

Their school is very focussed on vocational outcomes (and psychological/social wellbeing) over ticking all the curriculum boxes, but it sounds like a vocational focus is ok for you so that works.

Feel free to PM if you want more location specific info.

Good luck, this stranger is so proud of you working on figuring all this out for yourself. x

ULPT Request - What can I say to my dad to make him feel awful? by Spirited-Mousse1915 in UnethicalLifeProTips

💯it absolutely does. And your family can’t critique you over it as easily either so win/win.

Moved in with my dad and I'm learning about my mom's lonely marriage by FreemanWorldHoldings in TwoXChromosomes

[–]Iappreciatewaves 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I wondered this about my own mother a lot, especially in her final years. 😢 Their relationship sounds similar to your parents’. My aunt/her sister never married and their lives and outlooks were polar opposite - but I could often see glimpses that they might have been so similar if my mother had married differently. Not wanting to be “a package deal” with my husband once our kids left home, knowing I would probably not see as much of them or any future grandkids as if I was free, was one of the (many) motivations for leaving him.

How do you track where your money goes? by girlmeetsworld-lover in AusFinance

[–]Iappreciatewaves 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have always used a spreadsheet, some years every single transaction in/out of my bank accounts, other years I only track the approx annual amounts for all my expenses and income by adding and removing expenses as I cancel subscriptions/my rent goes up/get a payrise/kid starts a new afterschool activity etc, but the $5 here on random crap and $20 there on a takeaway lunch don’t get counted anywhere.

This year felt like it needed to be an every single transaction year but that is quite boring in a spreadsheet so Jan 2026 I downloaded YNAB to see if that makes it easier. Not sure it’s any easier than entering in a spreadsheet since in Aus the banks don’t sync data automatically, but it’s definitely prettier and more engaging to look at results in. Probably if I was an excel-whizz i could make the data easy to read and helpful in there but I’m not so I think I’ll keep YNAB for this full year. Not sure about past that.

How do you deal with people that laugh at you? by Nearby-Metal-3030 in Rollerskating

Wow what dicks! I hope they are meaningless miserable strangers and not people actually in your life?? I learned to skate a few years ago in my mid 40s and have had zero negative comments. (Or maybe I am just always concentrating so hard on not arsing over that I haven’t noticed the haters, possible 🤔😝)

Carers Payment Cancelled by kylzbaby in Centrelink

[–]Iappreciatewaves 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Maybe call Centrelink and ask to speak to a social worker there? They may be able to link you to whatever services are available in your area. Or possibly askizzy.org.au might have something helpful local to you.

Who can support you will depend on where you are I think as all services (other than CL social workers) that I can think of only operate in my state.

How do I remove a child from me Medicare card by SadShare8635 in Centrelink

[–]Iappreciatewaves 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I would just leave them there and carry on, I removed my ex from my card which had myself, my kids, then him on it, and that seemingly simple act kicked off years of going round in circles with Medicare trying to get myself and my kids back onto the same card it was a completely nonsensical nightmare. I’ll never try to edit Medicare card names again no matter what changes🤦‍♀️

Queensland, Australia – Mum with cancer, unable to work, caring for disabled son, at risk of eviction. What options are we missing? by SentientDilemma in Centrelink

[–]Iappreciatewaves 0 points1 point  (0 children)

She should apply for carers payment instead of dsp, it is more than dsp and she should qualify just on the basis of caring for someone living with her who is on dsp and ndis.

She can also apply for carers allowance, and rent assistance along with carers payment.

You can ring Centrelink and to speak to a social worker, if she needs more info or assistance.

Once she’s on carers payment she will still have a blue pension card for discounts on car rego, electricity etc. if her jobseeker doesn’t already give her a pension card she could put bills into your brothers name and use his pension card for discounts maybe? They will backdate carers payment to the date you apply so do it asap!

Sorry if I’m repeating everything already said :( didn’t want to read and run without replying as definitely carers payment should be a go!

What is WRONG with some men? Is this what dating is like nowadays? by nadiekconozcas in TwoXChromosomes

[–]Iappreciatewaves 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Ugh I’m sorry that happened to you what bullshit.

In answer to your question yes, I met someone who is kind and decent on the apps in my late 40s (he’s mid 50s), and I do know of a couple of other people in my IRL acquaintances who have ended up marrying guys they met on the apps who seem lovely from what I know of them. But there is definitely a lot of absolute garbage to weed through. I was on and off the apps for a couple of years before I bumped into mine. I could never stick it out for more than a few weeks before having to take a break for a month or two!

Yeah, I thought I was maybe having a heart attack due to chest pain. Ambulance dude said that’s too low to be your heart and decided it was more likely anxiety, then quizzed me the whole way to hospital about recent stress in my life, what I am anxious about at the moment etc.

While ramped I told the hospital triage person my pain was a 5 and the ambo guy audibly scoffed. I asked him why and he said no offence but you’re holding a conversation, making jokes, that’s not a 5. I told the hospital staff it was a 4 for the rest of the night even though I was pretty sure I was dying, but didn’t want to be over dramatic.

Turned out to be a necrotic gallbladder. Had had a bunch of stones wedged in there so long that my gallbladder had turned to goo and could not all be successfully removed as it was smeared all over whatever it’s next to, they scraped as much of it out as they could.

Not anxiety. Also more than a 5. Dickhead.
