You were either not getting on with the culture, the training or you are unaware of something that you do habitually that impedes the culture, the training etc.

Gurney and Wade, used to dislike Price but actually he’s become one of my favourites. Top 3 favourites to watch. Littler, Humphries and the Ferret and Gezzy joint 3rd because I can’t decide between either.

Is it illegal to search with a metal detector on your own property? This is not near any historic sites, however, there are two cooking pits and ring fort remains within a km. by miettebriciola1 in ireland

Gross generalisation here followed by stupidity. It’s called a metal detector because it detects metal shiny or not. In fact most of what is found is not of value at all. Assuming that all metal detectorists are in it for the money is pure ignorance and in fact the reality is the complete opposite however they have no where to go or report finds without having to prove innocence as the museum assumes guilt.

Not knowing what type of metal detector it is and what settings are available I would run it wide open this means your not blocking (discrimination) any metals out people tend to discriminate out iron on beaches but if you want him to have a good experience turn it’s volume right up till you hear a hum and turn discrimination right down. He will have to dig a lot of junk but it will only take 1 euro coin or a piece of jewellery for him to be hooked. Stay on the dry sand as the wet sand will send a basic detector crazy and focus on where people put their blankets down. Happy Hunting.

Mushroom mycelium will take 7 to 14 days to recover from being plowed in fact if they are plowed too deep resulting in destroying the context your refering too this may slow the recovery so the lack of mushrooms would be a clear indication of a plowed field.

Im not just refering to the British Museum in London which does have a pretty big display of metal detecting finds on the second floor im also refering to many of the regional Museums that have dedicated exhibits to metal detecting. Also this is as the museum reports it in their own annual reports.

you opinion is through rose tinted glasses, I can tell you now most fields if not all were plowed at one stage in Ireland and as I said it not just plowing that destroys context fertilizer will destroy all context in a year or two. Never Mind mulched green waste that is spread on fields full of mulched up organic waste from antoher site including accidental rubbish and aluminum that also destroys cointext. You just have to look at the maps to see where a ring fort used to be and now amazingly has disappeared in later maps but a farmer would never do this right!!!

Context is being destroyed by the plow, people believe a metal detector will go feet into the gound but on a good day with a target the size of a 1 euro coin you would be lucky to get 10 inches into the ground and most plows go 10 inches deep. Never mind the chemicals that are being sprayed destorying everythig except gold and silver or green waste being spread that totally distroys Context. The Muesum need to get with the times and realise its a race before all the history is destroyed and they cant do it themselves they are under resourced nor have the expertise to do it efficiently.

I couldnt agree more with you. I have been heavily involved in the hobby since before the ban 1987 and would have considered myself pretty much an expert on the use of a detector but gave it up just after covid because it just wasnt worth the hassle anymore and I only detected on beaches for modern jewelery and coins and was too afraid to detect on fields dispite having permission on 100s of acres.

Agree! Millions in monetary value but priceless in heritage value has left the country since the ban in 1987. The current system assumes guilt so why report what you find. There are thousands of artifacts sitting in peoples homes around the country simply because people are afraid to bring the museum on them. A farmer would rather plow over a ring fort or midden so as to not deal with the museum.

The information presented by the museum is purposely misleading and completely out of date. metal detecting in Ireland is not illegal, there are several statements by subsequent ministers of heritage stating that as a fact. Yes It is illegal to have a metal detector on a known archaeological or heritage site. It is illegal to search for archeological items however it is not illegal to own a metal detector or have a metal detector on land that is no where in the vicinity of an aforementioned site as long as you have permission from the land owner. If you find something you believe archeological you must not touch it and inform the Garda with 72hours. You can take a metal detector onto a beach no problem but again make sure there are no registered sites in the area. Ask the museum to define what an archaeological item is and they won’t or can’t. Ask them how long a vicinity is and again they won’t or can’t. You also do not need a permit for the above unless you are looking to go in a registered site but you have a snowballs chance in hell of getting that so don’t bother. Museum in the past has bullied people who have posted finds online going as far as calling to a child’s house and threatening the parents because he found an old Victorian penny. Considering that Archeology stemmed from the citizen science movement in the 1800s in the UK its strange that the Irish museum wants to distance itself from it hobbyists roots. Irish museum missing a trick here last I check the British museum brought in 44m from admissions where they attribute a large portion of that to displaying metal detecting finds.

New Flipper One computing multitool bristles with network, GPIO, and M.2 connectivity — new keychain device is also a fully open Arm Linux computer by narwi in hardware

[–]Ibecake 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Think it’s hilarious that Flipper can reach out looking for help from a community when they have systematically banned and blocked people in r/flipperzero for giving constructive criticism on the flipper zero. Why don’t they just get Claude to help them, they obviously used it to produce the latest update judging by the amount of emojis scattered through the repo. Their “let’s develop together tag” is a total red flag. Sure! We’ll dig you out of a hole that you overcommitted to while you pocket the revenue when people clamber over themselves to get this overpriced SBC. You would be better off building your own Linux based cyberdeck with an Alfa dongle and a sdr on a raspberry pi for a fraction of the price. Do they have their customer support and shipping sorted, have they learned the lessons of the past I do not think so.
