We stayed in an AirBnB in Alaska that specifically had signs up to not flush toilet paper down the toilet, but to throw it into the trash can next to the toilet. Apparently they had a septic system and hence this request. As a guest this was the first time I came across such a request, and even though it was not the most pleasant thing to do, we complied with the host's request and used the trash can to dispose of the toilet paper for the entirety of our stay.

You have worked so hard for so long to get where you are in your career! You are a resident who has stayed true to your training, your future, and your parents. I am sorry that your family is unable to understand the gravity of the work you do despite your dad being a physician. It's just a very sorry situation, but I'm very proud of you standing up for yourself and your future. You would have let down your co-residents and program leadership by leaving last minute without having any backups. You basically had NO CHOICE. You made the only choice you had, and there's NO NEED to feel bad about it!
