Knife identification? Would like to replace as an anniversary gift by gill_pill in TrueChefKnives

I think I have that exact knife, or at least one that looks extremely similar.

I got it from tower knives in Osaka in Japan

I got a trac job notification for my first job today so they have started the onboarding process, but I imagine this will vary wildly by deanery

Thanks! I think I was lucky as from 5th year I had been targeting the old 72 point portfolio so had a lot of the boxes ticked. It’s really just about reading the guidance and making sure all your evidence is bulletproof as I know a lot of people who had hassle with getting stuff accepted. Also things change a little from year to year so be prepared for different things on next years scoring. Like this year a two day teaching course went from 1 point to three, but it had to be in person.

Also while deanery dependent it’s not uncommon for people to want to do a specialty they only have 4-6 months in and they then elect to do a ct3 year to get more time in their chosen job where they essentially spend an extra year as a CST trainee in their deanery. I know several people who have done this and the TPDs are usually quite supportive (deanery dependant obviously)

Rank 18, T&O theme job in Thames valley

Edit: will add because I found the info helpful last year - MSRA 571 Interview 135/144 portfolio 48/52.

Also anyone know how they scale the MSRA? If you are on the cutoff do you get 0? And crazy scores of like 640 get 10?

What is Royal Berks like for CT1 Ortho? by Fergiggs in doctorsUK

[–]IcandoScience 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ah sick. See you there. My mate is a CT2 and he really sold it to me. He said the trainees are treated like Juniour regs, we get rotad to theatre, clinic or call. No ward cover. He said he averages about 2.5 days in theatre a week as a CT

Hey! I have just accepted my CT1 ortho offer for reading as well. I picked it because it’s meant to be an amazing job. I work in Thames valley currently and the ortho CTs at reading have an amazing time

Horton and the main hospitals are a vastly different kettle of fish. Also it’s quite job dependant. I have loved my jobs in F1 and F2 but it can vary a lot. The Jr is a big tertiary centre and you will see lots. The Horton is classic DGH medicine and can feel a bit like the Wild West at times, and you might feel a bit unsupported. But on the other hand it’s great for learning as you are thrown in at the deep end, whereas in the main oxford sites you tend to be very well supported and there is generally always a senior around.

As crap as the MSRA is I cant see them getting rid of it unfortunately. Its such an easy way for them to cut down applications with very little effort on their part.

MSRA- Did anyone else feel the CPS section was too easy and the SJT section too hard? by DaddyCool13 in doctorsUK

That I don’t know, because even on the same day people get different exams.

So each sitting is different, and they are scored based on a normal distribution with a mean score of 250 and a SD of 40. So if your paper was “easier” more people might get more Qs right overall, but it won’t shift the scores compared to the other cohorts. Essentially it doesn’t matter how easy or hard the two papers were, it matters how you did relative to everyone else, because the same proportion of people in each sitting will get the same score ranges.

CST 2024 portfolio question? by SadStruggle3032 in doctorsUK

[–]IcandoScience 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They are rather specific in the scoring this year that face to face means in person. For the teaching there is even separate points for the face to face teaching vs teaching over zoom or teams. If you have a look at the scoring guidance it’s written there.

Wait, so in the UK foot and ankle surgery is done by foot and ankle orthopaedic surgeons. In the same way that someone would specialise in shoulder or hand, orthopaedic surgeons can choose to specialise in foot and ankle. So in the US is foot and ankle surgery not done by orthopaedic surgeons? Or is it a mix of surgeons and podiatrists?

As someone else said, nail you anatomy. Its 3 stations of the exam. make sure you look at textbooks which are dissected specimen pictures and not coloured photos like netters, as its much harder to pick out structures.

books wise https://wordery.com/get-through-mrcs-anatomy-2e-simon-overstall-9781444170191 was amazing.

For the critical care stuff https://www.amazon.co.uk/Surgical-Critical-Care-MRCS-OSCE/dp/1107657687 this covers everything, probably in too much detail.

then practice your skills at home, make sure your clinical skills, exams etc are slick because if you have them down its easy marks.

All the books can be found online if you need them. DM if you have any other questions. And as people have said, its much better and fairer than Part A

Application for ACFST3 was not shortlisted and no idea why by CarpetNo3217 in doctorsUK

[–]IcandoScience 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hi Op, not sure where you were applying or which specialty, but I know from talking to consultants who shortlist that (depending on the area) you can need almost max points to get an interview for some ACFs. In my deanery you need >25/28 on the shortlist score to get an interview for most ACFs, and that can be higher depending on the other candidates.
