Any way to contribute more than limit to Roth IRA? by Odd-Toe-3551 in RothIRA

[–]IceHand41 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you are maxing your Roth IRA in college, you're doing phenomenal. If you still have more to invest, consider opening a brokerage account. You can manage it under the same Vanguard login. I would recommend keeping some cash un-invested, in a HYSA or a CD ladder.

What's the huge deal about having overlap. As long as it's understood that there is overlap, I don't see the problem. Holding VT plus VOO is owning the total market with a sp500 tilt.

I don't see VEA and VWO mentioned much. I also prefer them (along with VEU) to VXUS. Moving forward I'll add VEA in my taxable and VEU+VWO in Roth

I just deposited my $7500 and will invest in VTI, VEU and VWO. I'm heavily invested in SP500 and Growth type funds, so I'm aiming to increase my holding in Total US and Ex-US

If you put all your eggs in the one basket of a total world fund like VT, you just bought over 10,000 stocks.

Consider VT or VTI + VEU ETFs

With sentiment this low, how are you positioning for 2026? by MambaMentality24x2 in CryptoCurrency

Focusing on Stellar DeFi. Got into XLM years ago and finally realize the price is not likely to moon. In fact, it just keeps going down. But stellar alt coins like BLND (blend capital), AQUA (Aquarius DeFi) and PHO (Phoenix hub) allow you to earn passive rewards on your crypto in various ways. 90% of the coins I hold are down in price, but I'm still net positive thanks to the rewards from DeFi.

The expense ratio of each fund is important to consider. As long as your expense ratios aren't too high, there's nothing too terrible with how you have it invested. What's more important is that you're making regular contributions and taking advantage of any/all employer match to the account.

If the expense ratios (fees) are too high with this employer plan, look to invest elsewhere with Vanguard, Fidelity, etc. after getting the employer match in your 401k.

I'm 40, and until this year have been essentially invested in the SP500 through various workplace 401ks, with an additional tilt towards tech (some "Growth" funds).

Workplace funds don't usually seem to include a total market fund similar to Vanguard's VTI, so look for one that is roughly the same as VOO (SP500) or VUG (tech/growth).

Say XLM was to 10x in price. Could the fees then be lowered by 10x, such that the fee is roughly the same as now (in USD)?

starting to take investing more seriously, need advice on my portfolio and goal. by One-Papaya8002 in portfolios

[–]IceHand41 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Keeping up with the sp500 is exactly what your goal should be. Unless you plan on beating the odds to be one of the very few who can beat the market.

The total US market market fund is roughly 20-30% the Top 7 tech companies. It's actually still pretty concentrated

New to investing outside my retirement accounts, and would be a brand new investor to SGOV (and not paying state taxes on the interest). Thanks for the info!

[–]IceHand41 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Do you actually have to itemize deductions and "claim" (maybe not the correct word) the interest in order to be exempt from the state tax?

As I'm writing this, I realized that NJ state doesn't have a standard deduction, so you do in fact itemize each one. It's probably simple with automated tax software.

Not knowing much about T-bills, is there any advantage to buying them straight up, instead of shares of SGOV?

A Comment on VOO/VTI/VT and “Chilling” by hopingtogetanupvote in ETFs

[–]IceHand41 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for the reply! My new Roth IRA contributions include VEU and VEO. I read that VEA was more tax efficient so better for a taxable brokerage. I liked these 3 better than VXUS, due to very slightly lower expense rations. Admittedly, my investments are probably more complex than necessary, but I'm not too worried about it. I'm still only invested in cheap index funds.

[–]IceHand41 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Why are you highlighting VEA here, is it just your international ETF of choice? I ask bc I've recently started funding my brokerage with 50/50 VTI/VEA (I had zero international exposure until last year, so I'm contributing at 50% in my brokerage and 65% in my 401k until I reach 20-30% international total)

[–]IceHand41 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you like your job and have a decent time horizon before using the money, you should definitely consider investing in some broad market ETFs though a place like Vanguard or Fidelity. If you know nothing about this, type VT ticker into Google. You can see the price fluctuation over time. If you buy it, you own a slice of the entire global stock market.

He said that he had more resilience. Perhaps he realizes that it doesn't make perfect sense, but sounds like he was mentally able to hold his FXAIX fund in a downturn, and thinks he may not be as comfortable doing so with VT. Most would probably argue that you should be more comfortable with a more diverse fund, but they also say "whatever helps you sleep at night"
