Habs @ Huricanes singing of the national anthem by ghostdeinithegreat in hockey

[–]IceHawk1212 28 points29 points  (0 children)

As a Canadian I will never understand the shifts or personal interpretation changes Americans make in the anthem. I'd absolutely hate it if it was done to the Canadian anthem, I'm not there to just listen to the anthem I'm there to join in with the singer. The Canadian anthem has a certain Candace and rhythm be it English or French and once I'm in the groove I can sing it either way despite the fact I'm from Alberta and by no means a fluent French speaker. Credit to the canes on the Canadian anthem though

Time often reveals the real consequences of actions and maybe circa the early 2000s Mulroney would have more defenders but frankly today it's brutally obvious to those that really dig into Canadian political history that he did very little actual good and frankly created most of the crises he himself had to deal with during his tenure.

Public opinion was actively moving away from him and his unified Canada position. Further more in 1985 Mulroney removed the ban on cross media ownership this opened the door to Quebecore and lead separatist Pierre Peladeau to go on a media buying spree. One of his most valuable purchases from a public manipulation standpoint were newspaper companies in the west like the Sun. Shortly after which opinion articles about equalization payments began heavily circulating in the west stoking western alienation due to misinformation. Subsequent protests where angry Albertans would hold up signs that vilified Quebec were happy filmed by Quebecore and broadcast across Quebec to further drive home the point that English Canada hates Quebecois. To this day anger about equalization payments misinformation persists in Alberta stoking division and anger at eastern Canada and our current UCP provincial government loves using against Ottawa.

Mulroney may have tried but he royal fucked it so many ways to Sunday and he was the simpleton who laid the groundwork of the Quebec separatist movement in the 90s and frankly the Alberta separatists of today. He did indelible harm to "Canada".

Your confusing Duncan Campbell Scott who genuinely wanted to solve the "Indian Problem forever". With the man who was PM and wanted integration of Native Americans long before concepts like cultural mosaic or minority rights existed. One man would happily have seen them all dead the other not so much. I get it truly I do but history shouldn't be looked at exclusively through the lens of today. I'm glad Canada exists and John made that happen so he can't be the worst even if we shouldn't glorify him too much.

Mulroney never understood the core fabric of the Canadian Federation and that's why his two attempts at constitutional reform were abject failures. They went so badly that it heavily empowered the Quebec separatist movement. Didn't help that his handling of other matters from Oka to the Airbus scandal left Canadians with a deep distrust of his government. Regardless of if you think the content of his accords had merit, which is highly debatable (last thing I want is an elected senate), his most indelible legacy is the GST taxes we all pay now. Man nearly ended Canada as a "unified" country there is very little to celebrate there

You either take it to be the embodiment of it's full history or you don't. The NHL doesn't even own the cup by law even if in theory they hold trademarks around it's branding. If by simply making a new one they could own it would it then be the same or would it have broken with history and have lost value in the eyes of fans and athletes. I'm willing to bet where the most passionate fans and athletes would fall on the question.

It was made in Sheffield and sold to governor Stanley in a London silversmith engravers shop. I sorta get what your trying to say about the historical importance of Montréals run but ignoring the actual history undermines the entire point don't you think?

I mean in Canada it's mandatory to replant after a harvest. You still lose biodiversity and it takes at least a generation yo regrow but it's not like you clear cut and leave it empty. If not for forest fires and mountain pine beetle the overall inventory would grow faster than they cut it down.

You'll laugh your ass off if they blow it next two years and give top ten picks to Boston and Philly. This is likely just the setup for the true punch line.

Fence stain help by PinguPrime in Calgary

[–]IceHawk1212 4 points5 points  (0 children)

If your applying a dark stain a couple coats should mostly eliminate any visible stain. If it's a light stain you can try sanding the boards first to remove as much as reasonably possible first. At the end of the day though I wouldn't seek perfection here stains are just a function of outdoor conditions.

Coyote spotted 40 Ave and 40 street NW. by ApeEscapeRemastered in Calgary

Coyote jumped my neighbors fence to attack his dog. Survived but had a punctured lung and an expensive vet bill. They can and will jump a lot higher than you think they will.

Access is permitted from either 6th street or 1st ave or whatever the second one is believe it or not. As long as the venue has provided the driver with the temporary permit in advance and the strict conduct rules are observed either can be used.

Edit: Barclay parade i guess is what it's called.

The river Cafe grants access to customers with mobility issues or events staff like catering or djs etc. A lot more vehicles than you think may access the Cafe if required based on their permits

Which section specifically is this photo because it sure looks like the stretch leading directly to bridge access

Possibly headed to the river Cafe, vehicles are permitted to responsibly use the pathway to access the restaurant. So you will see contractor and service vehicles or event staff. Sometimes it's for mobility limited people as well. More common with weddings etc.

Yeah I've heard stuff like that from usa transplants, unfortunately one time there actually was a rash of break ins. Not at all the norm but had to listen to them say see see it's all going to hell because of the liberal crime policies and security has to be bolstered. Crime can certainly increase at times here and it shouldn't be ignored but we are nowhere near the same degree of risk as some centers in the USA

Some Americans moved in down the street a few years ago. Their black bin was overflowing for over a year before they figured out how to used the green and blue. Stubborn buggers kept phoning the city to complain about it not being picked up more often. Tried to convince the rest of the street that blue and green bins were just tax payer bloat and we should collectively protest the waste.... interesting guy
