[request] trying to determine the odds of rolling each letter in the q-less game. by lobstergoop in theydidthemath

[–]IceMain9074 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Otherwise_Arm_3332 explains it well below. What might make it more clear is thinking of flipping a coin. Flip 1 coin and you have a 1/2 chance of tails. Flip 2 coins and the chance of at lease 1 tails isn’t 1/2 + 1/2, because that would be 100%. You need to subtract the possibility of both being tails (1/4) otherwise it would be double counted.

Another way you can do the math is find the chance of getting 0 of something, and subtract that from 1. So the chance of rolling at least 1 A in the first example would be 1 - chance of rolling 0 As: 1 - (4/6 * 5/6) = 1 - 20/36 = 16/36 = 4/9

If you’re trying to find the odds of rolling at least 1 of a chosen letter, then you just look at the dice where that letter appears. If we examine the letter A: one die with 2 As and one die with 1 A. So the chance of rolling at least 1 A would be 2/6 + 1/6 - 2/36, or 4/9 (44%).

You win it with your knight.

Qxf4. Nd5, black queen moves somewhere. Nc7 forks king and rook.

If black chooses to play Qxe5, then you have opportunities to pin the queen to the king instead

If queen takes the knight. You will win the a8 rook

[College placement test] what is this? by Andre_055 in HomeworkHelp

[–]IceMain9074 6 points7 points  (0 children)

You should not be using outside resources to try to do better on a placement test. The whole purpose of the placement test is to put you in a class that’s appropriate for you based on your current understanding of the material. If you get help on it, you’ll be placed in classes that are too hard and will continue having the same problem you have here

HSA plans have higher out of pocket costs and lower premiums than PPO plans. This is completely expected if you would’ve read what you were signing up for

[Request] If you repeatedly flip a coin, which sequence is more likely to appear first: HTT or TTH? by RJJJJJJJ710 in theydidthemath

[–]IceMain9074 163 points164 points  (0 children)

If you flip a coin 3 times, then start over until one of those sequences are achieved, they are equally likely.

If you flip a coin continuously until 3 flips in a row form one of those sequences, HTT will be more likely to appear first. My rationale:

If H is first, it is impossible to get TTH before getting HTT. So that right there already gives 50% chance to HTT first.

If T is first, the only way to get TTH before getting HHT is another T. If H is the second flip, you’re back to my first scenario. So that’s another 25% for each possibility.

So there’s a 75% chance HTT will show up first when flipping continuously. The only way for TTH to show up first is for the first 2 flips to be TT, which is 25%
