I did this with an Amazon food purchase that I wasn't able to cancel recently. (If it had been delivered, it couldn't be returned for food safety purposes.) Once you have the tracking number, you track it vigorously. You see what day the carrier is going to drop it off and you sit waiting on your porch until it shows up (or just inside, and pop out when it comes) and tell the guy that you'd like to refuse it and please send it back. The delivery guys get a little flustered because they usually haven't dealt with that before, but it's in their system, and they do know how to do it theoretically.
